can anyone tell me how to say in turkish the present and past simple tenses of "to say"?

i, you, he/she/it, we, you, they say

and:

i said, you said, he said etc

dont be sure of anythign im saying coz im not sure, but the verb to say is demek, so simple past tense must be

-dedim

-dedin

-dedi

-dedik

-dediniz

-dediler

but i dont know present simple tense :S

 Not sure if these are correct but heres my try

Is that verb the same as demek? I eman does it have the same meaning? and is there one which is better than the other??? I mean to use during speech?

Simple Past  made with "di" or "dý"    

(AND YOU CAN PUT "SÖYLE" INSTEAD   OF THE VERB "DE"                                                      

sometimes "söyle" is used.)

 Sorry doudi, i cant answer your questions because i´m a beginner in Turkish. Perhaps someone else can?  I have seen both söylemek and demek used. It was just a bit of practise for me in the present tense

 Actually they have same diffrences as between tell and say in English

Mostly Söylemek means tell

Bana söyle...tell me

When demek  can have the meaning of say

But still söylemek can be used as say like in:

I said she was right  = Haklý/Doðru olduðunu söyledim.

Söyle is more like "speak, tell, or even sing". In movies, e.g. interogation, interogater says "söyle" to the prisoner. (different example) If somebody sang a song, O (he,she,it) þarký (song) söyledi.

"dedi" is used for quotations. "Ben geliyor, dedi"=I am coming, he said.

"demek" most closely = to say

(Like English, Turkish has both "direct" and "indirect" quotation forms, My example above is a "direct" form. The indirect form used söylemek in place of demek but I think that is a little beyond this discussion, and I don´t know it well enough to teach it)

konuþmak most closely =discuss or converse.

I think what he means by direct and indirect is

Direct form: "Ben geliyorum", dedi

Indirect form: Geldiðini söyledi.

Is that correct?

Can i ask why you placed an l after the verb root? why didnt you just put -r right away???

this present tense really is driving me crazy!!!!

This is what i did ok, i took away the mek from söylemek and because söyle ends in a vowel i added -r.

Maybe what i did is incorrect, i dont really know!! It would  be good if someone could please confirm as im now feeling more confused than before ?

 Yes-that´s correct.

Gel-dið-in-i bana söyledi. He told me (that) you came

Gel-dið-i-n-i bana söyledi. He told me (that) he came

verb + dik + personal suffix + case suffix

Consonants and vowels of -dik change according to the applicable rules.

The construction with -dik creates a subclause within the sentence, accentuated with square brackets in the examples below.

oku-duð-um kitab = the book [(that) i read]

ne söyle-dik-ler-i bilmek istiyor = he wants to know [(that) what they say/said]

söyle-dið-i-n-den eminim = i´m sure [(that) he told it]

Ali´nin Ankaraya git-tið-i-n-i bana söyledi = he told me [that Ali had gone to Ankara]

she says nothing = hiçbir þey söylemez, hiçbir þey söylemiyor

past:

what did she say? : o, ne dedi?

she said nothing : hiçbir þey söylemedi
