Quoting erdinc: This is impossible. Sooner or later they will catch those people. On every occasion Turkish men are asked to prove their military status. If you haven't done it, then you can never travel abroad, you can never register to a university and you will find it very difficult to find an employer who doesn't question your military service status.
The army is very strict on following their regulations, even more strict than I am on following our forum rules.
Quoting miss_ceyda: back to the topic...
i have heard that it is no longer compulsory to do the military in turkey. |

It is still mandatory and an obligation to serve in the Turkish military.
My ex-husband had avoided it for a few years and during those years he had a difficult time finding a good job where the Military Officals wouldn't find out about him and during the time that we were married he couldn't even travel to the US, besides this is something that is also listed on their birth records along with any major changes in their lives.
Yes, sooner or later they do catch these people because my ex-husband was recently made to serve and he is now 34

As long as you're still receiving your education, they can't force you to go. But the day you graduate, they will take you. If you refuse, and you only happen to be a Turkish citizen, you will be put to jail. But if you're a dual citizen, you will lose your Turkish citizenship, and be kicked out. However, you can always come to visit Turkey as a tourist with your other citizenship. But the thing is, many Turks see "army" as an "honor" thing. They think if you don't serve it, you're not man enough. It's silly peer-pressure really, but then there are those who are just patriotic and "want" to serve. I guess it just depends on how you look at it. Also it "is" true that there are some circumstances where you won't "have" to serve the army. They'll give you a "Curuk Raporu" basically saying you're not fit to serve the army. But it is sort of like a humiliating thing to have. If you're too fat, or too skinny, or insane, or blind, or missing limbs, you won't have to serve the army.

i think the national service is a bad thing, two of my very good friends both had very bad expiriences in the army, one went to sleep one night and awoke to find 9 of his comrades dead, throats slit in their sleep, and another was imprisoned and beaten severely whilst he was there, the whipping scars on his back and chest make my skin crawl to think what hes been through, my best friends boyfriend was a sniper in the army and he is not mentally normal now, my friend yilmaz goes in three weeks an i dread to thik what will happen to him.

Hi Melek!
I also lost a good friend in army, he haved only 20 years old and were shooted last year... he didn't survive coz there in camp nobody could find his type of blood, what an horrible death!! Allah gives peace his soul... And i can't understand whyyyy his brother must take his place in the army!!!
I think must be other kind of "national service", not only military service for the young people...
Anyway they are so brave...
