Quoting Marinka: I've been in love with a handsome smart turk for almost a year now. I guess i've been talking about it so much that one of my friends decided to go to Turkey to find out on her own if turks are so cool.
Now she asked me to translate a couple of sms that he sent her. I'm only a beginner and couldn't do that. therefore I hope that friendly and helpful people on this site will help me. thank you beforehand,
the text is the following:
1.Sen en iyisi bi bok yazma benide rahatsiz etme. Ok.
2. Lan oglum senin baska isin yokmu. Su kelimeleride dogru duzgun yaz. Inglizce yazmaktan haberim bile yok.
|
Do you make fun of us? Or are you serious?
1. You'd better not write me any shit and don't disturb me. Ok.
2. Man don't you have any other job? And write the words properly. I don't know about writing english at all.

Last week, I've read something about 'lan'.
The original word, has a mongol origin. The real word is 'Ulan', and it means 'warrior' and it form part of many propter names, for example Ulan Bator (capital of Mongolia).
Nowdays, the word 'lan' comes from the original Ulan, and it means something like 'man'. But anyway, it is used in slang language and if you tell it to someone that you don't know so much, you are going to hear something that you won't like at all.

Like oğlan? oğlan -- > olan --> ulan --> lan?
And we can hear sometimes len. Are they same?

lan, ulan these are just slang words with almost no meaning. think about "well" (the one you use when stating a sentence) in english. it is almost meaningles. still it has a meaning like "actually" sometimes. Lan and Ulan are somewhat simmilar (well just to give you an example it doesnt really fit that much.) these do not have a spesific meaning. but it is a slang indicating the person is not fond of you or the situation he is talking about. Len on the countrary is a softer version which may indicate sympathy.
this guy seems to be completely unavare of who he is talking to and probably things he is beeing fooled by some guy!!!
1.Sen en iyisi bi bok yazma benide rahatsiz etme. Ok.
you sould better not write a shit and dont bother me ok?
2. Lan oglum senin baska isin yokmu. Su kelimeleride dogru duzgun yaz. Inglizce yazmaktan haberim bile yok.
(lan) hey dude dont you have any other thing to do. just write these word correctly. I dont have the slightest clue about writing in english.
i dont think Lan is related to mongol word. It should be a coincidence. Lan is a slang word that seems to be evolved within daily language.

I think "Lan oglum" was translated too politely as "hey dude". Actually it is a good translation and could be like this in some instinces but in this case I think the intention was not friendly as we understand from the rest of the text.
I would translate "lan oğlum" as "hey you damn kid" in this particular sentence.
By the way oğlum means son.
I just saw Meltem's translation. Yes, I agree it is also very good.
Lan can be as strong as the f word.

hello everybody,
In fact Neuro is right. the dirl for whom i was translating it, said that she sent an sms from another number, so that turkish guy must have not recognized her. Thanks for everyone who tried and did in fact help. Besides 'lan' etymology is very interesting.

ok but that may be too harsh too. that is just an awfull and most unlucky incident. this should not be a way to judge him. I am a man I would not like helping other men in these situations but i have to be honest. I might have done the same if i get messages that I dont understand at all. Good luck

if someone sends me a msg by mistake then i would politely reply, that this is a wrong number, or i would simply ignore. this isnt still the reason to be that harsh!
