No matter what your experience is you CANNOT judge all because of one bad apple! I am sorry to say that spousal abuse is universal. There are even documented cases of women abusing their husbands. Women and men should be warned about losing themselves to any relationship and not demanding respect from their significant others. I understand that you are hurt. Most women face abuse in the east
Much of Turkey, in particular Eastern Turkey, is still backward and Islamic. The following extracts are from August 2, 2006 Turkish Daily News. The results of the study did not paint a positive picture, noting that things became worse as one studied the state of women in rural regions. The study will be published in a book titled There Is Still a Lot to Do. I saw much of the isolation women were subjected to even in West Berlin in self-imposed ghettos.

A poll conducted by the Van Women's Association (VAKAD) has shown in a study that 56 percent of all women interviewed in Van face physical abuse, noting that as the level of women's education increases the number who choose their own mate and marry of their own volition goes up as well. They surveyed 766 women between the ages of 15 and 60, 590 of whom were married.

The study showed that 42.7 percent of respondents had married through arranged marriages. Only university graduates decided who they would marry and none of them married their relatives. As the level of education drops, marriages with relatives increase in frequency. 56 percent of those questioned said they faced physical abuse, with 53 percent of married women being physically abused by husbands or mothers-in-law. The study showed 53.7 percent were abused by their husbands, 29.8 percent by their mothers-in-law, 13.3 percent by all adults in the family, 2 percent by their fathers-in-law and 1.2 percent by second wives.

Out of the 766 women polled 338 said they faced abuse outside the home, with 29.6 percent coming from boyfriends, 22.9 percent from bosses, 17.4 percent from teachers and 12.5 percent workmates. 83.5 percent of the women experienced emotional abuse, 66 percent verbal abuse, 56 percent physical abuse, 33.7 percent economic abuse and 14.7 sexual abuse. Just over 51 percent of these women were abused because they came home late.

49.5 percent of those questioned said they would not want to be born as women if they had the chance. The percentage of those who didn't want to be born as women increased with decreased education levels. Most illiterate women don't want to be born again as women. The number of those who thought a woman without a man would find it hard to survive decreased with increased education, she said, adding, No university graduate agreed with the statement Housework is suitable for women'. 55.5 percent of those polled said no matter how much a woman worked outside, housework was still her responsibility. Fully 57.4 percent of those questioned said adultery was a crime and should be punished.

I really think your term "backward" to describe any country and its people as being very prejudicial. Because a country and its people act contrary to what you believe is correct, does not make them backward. I still believe that women and men around the world face deplorable living situations and especially impoverished peoples. I think instead of labeling Turkey 'backwards' you should find international organizations like "MADRE" and send them some donations so that they can assist women in learning self-empowerment skills. Or, maybe volunteer at a local battered woman's shelter or work with teens to keep them from becoming single, unwed, impoverished mothers, as the highest precentage of abused women come from this group. I am sure that Turkey has a high rate of spousal abuse. But, there are many unreported cases in the Western world too. Just read a CNN report, today, where a man in USA killed his wife while she was at a safe house for women. It happens everywhere. You can't just pick on Turkey. This is a global issue that crosses racial, ethnic, religious, and economic lines.

The thing is,having own problem doesn't mean to spread accusations to whole country or nations,and again here ,talking about other people's religion in a way they don't accept ,judging it without knowing it !

My father remembers white only drinking fountains and having to sit in the back of the bus. As a child my teacher refused to teach me to read. It wasn't until my mother went to school did I learn how to read. My gym Physical Education teacher used to form two teams for playing sports, "whites" vs "blacks". Yet, I have never used any of this as an excuse to not succeed. However, because of these experiences I WILL NOT remain silent about how African Americans and people of color are still enduring racism and prejudice today. It is a sad fact and if you saw last years hurrican Katrina, it is quite visible.

Also if you research history about slavery, Africans practiced a different form of slavery for century. More like indentured servitude. Not the brutality that african slaves endured in the Americas & in the Caribbean.

capoeira..i too havre heard of such racism still in america today..not two years ago my father's friend from nigeria(lives here in britain) went travelling across the southern states..he said he encountered several places where black people were still highly unwelcome and in his last visit his family(including two very young children!!) were held up at gunpoint by white americans who said they didn't have the right to drive and stole their car leaving them strnded with no belongings!! i couldn't believe it and actually mentioned it to an american member on this site before who told me these kind of things dont happen anymore!! unfortunately these things are still rife in the community..depends on whether the people surrounding u or not have brains as to whether they choose to be racist i guess..i know it happens in england as well..my cousin is mixed race(dominician/west indian and english) and she has encountered so many problems at school..going to nightclubs etc...
