Quoting Capoeira:

You do have freedom of speech, my point exactely! But when you express yourself so negatively, I HATE this I HATE that it doesn't get you anywhere. I sound so American, because ironically enough I am. As far as being chained to a bottom of a boat and brought here, I think your exaggerating this. Maybe your ancestors, but then again it sounds like your playing this card like so many do. Let's blame the white people for everything. The Indians are who I feel bad for. I do agree with you on one thing, diversity is welcomed here. In fact, I welcome anyone who wants to come here to work and support our ecomony. I'm tired of supporting the welfare.

Who is blaming 'white' people? I mentioned that to point out that I come from an oppressed people. 500 years of slavery and then Jim Crow laws are no exaggeration. It is a very sad part of our U.S. History that is clearly documented.

But you mentioned leaving here if I 'hate' something. I cannot leave here. My ancestors along with other sympathetic americans, white, asians, latinos etc. lost their lives, endured police dogs, beatings and torture so that I can vote, have a voice, have access to education. I 'hate' this part of our racist culture here! But, because they struggled so that I can be where I am, I cannot leave here and those still struggling for equality. You cannot deny our history nor its impact on our country today. I am staying to empower those who are being left behind, and since I have traveled outside of the U.S. I have seen how others live as well...I think as an American I should also be a voice for them. Others should know that bad things are happening in our world. Maybe by raising awareness people will speak out and gov. will begin to act to help those in need regardless of being 'black' or 'white'.

Eva this is why I mentioned slavery. It is relevent to me and my history as a U.S. citizen and why I stay here.

Eva:
Slavery and its results are present in the U.S. today. Racism is alive and thriving in our country. It just didn't happen to my 'ancestors'. My father remembers white only drinking fountains and having to sit in the back of the bus. As a child my teacher refused to teach me to read. It wasn't until my mother went to school did I learn how to read. My gym Physical Education teacher used to form two teams for playing sports, "whites" vs "blacks". Yet, I have never used any of this as an excuse to not succeed. However, because of these experiences I WILL NOT remain silent about how African Americans and people of color are still enduring racism and prejudice today. It is a sad fact and if you saw last years hurrican Katrina, it is quite visible.

Also if you research history about slavery, Africans practiced a different form of slavery for century. More like indentured servitude. Not the brutality that african slaves endured in the Americas & in the Caribbean.

capoeira..i too havre heard of such racism still in america today..not two years ago my father's friend from nigeria(lives here in britain) went travelling across the southern states..he said he encountered several places where black people were still highly unwelcome and in his last visit his family(including two very young children!!) were held up at gunpoint by white americans who said they didn't have the right to drive and stole their car leaving them strnded with no belongings!! i couldn't believe it and actually mentioned it to an american member on this site before who told me these kind of things dont happen anymore!! unfortunately these things are still rife in the community..depends on whether the people surrounding u or not have brains as to whether they choose to be racist i guess..i know it happens in england as well..my cousin is mixed race(dominician/west indian and english) and she has encountered so many problems at school..going to nightclubs etc...
