Palin: wrong woman, wrong message

Sarah Palin shares nothing but a chromosome with Hillary Clinton. She is Phyllis Schlafly, only younger.
By Gloria Steinem
September 4, 2008
Here´s the good news: Women have become so politically powerful that even the anti-feminist right wing -- the folks with a headlock on the Republican Party -- are trying to appease the gender gap with a first-ever female vice president. We owe this to women -- and to many men too -- who have picketed, gone on hunger strikes or confronted violence at the polls so women can vote. We owe it to Shirley Chisholm, who first took the "white-male-only" sign off the White House, and to Hillary Rodham Clinton, who hung in there through ridicule and misogyny to win 18 million votes.

But here is even better news: It won´t work. This isn´t the first time a boss has picked an unqualified woman just because she agrees with him and opposes everything most other women want and need. Feminism has never been about getting a job for one woman. It´s about making life more fair for women everywhere. It´s not about a piece of the existing pie; there are too many of us for that. It´s about baking a new pie.

Selecting Sarah Palin, who was touted all summer by Rush Limbaugh, is no way to attract most women, including die-hard Clinton supporters. Palin shares nothing but a chromosome with Clinton. Her down-home, divisive and deceptive speech did nothing to cosmeticize a Republican convention that has more than twice as many male delegates as female, a presidential candidate who is owned and operated by the right wing and a platform that opposes pretty much everything Clinton´s candidacy stood for -- and that Barack Obama´s still does. To vote in protest for McCain/Palin would be like saying, "Somebody stole my shoes, so I´ll amputate my legs."

Wow, apparently I missed alot when I went to work!   I think it is good to debate these issues.. not just in our own country but around the world.  The original subject was on a politicians views, and how she may or may not change things for the better or worse, but I think Roswitha is right here.. This is a woman who comes from a privaledged family. Not a poor one, or one that has had to work her way through life.. This is not saying that she has not had hard times, Im sure she has, we all do.  But this article shouts out the "agenda" that McCain had in seeking a woman in the first place.  Kudos!

Some of what you say is simply not true.. Palins daughter never said she didn´t want the child, again this is what the left wing media is exploiting and it´s simply not true.  What does her personal family issues have to do with being a good politican by the way? Conservatives don´t have a problem with sex education and yes they do teach this in public AND pivate schools, I know this from experience.  The problem they have is Obama wanting to teach this to first graders.. Teaching "abstinence only" is not a result for growing teen pregnancies.  I´m interested to know what Turkey´s teenage pregnancy rate is.

State and religion doesn´t have a place in schools, however we still impose our Christian religion holidays on children who are in public schools.  Tell those children they will no longer have plays or christmas break...why is everyone such afraid of religion.  The last time I looked saying a little prayer never hurt anyone.  Maybe that´s the problem with kids these days.

I dont think her family issues have anything to do with whether she is a good candidate or not.  I just wonder what she will change with her pro-life views.  I think that every woman should have the option available to her whether or not to keep a child.  That should not be used as a form of birth control, as some have done, but it should still be an option with no strings attached to it.  There are many that would see that changed.  I have also not heard of Obama wanting to teach this to first graders.  I dont think they would understand nor be intrested in such a topic!

I also think that Turkey has a much lower rate simply because they have such strong family bonds.  We dont have much of that here anymore.  Teens simply dont listen to their parents nor respect them.  Also we have parents here who have children and then dont teach them or guide them into adulthood.  Family ties here are not strong, like they are in Turkey or many of the other ME nations.

I am not saying that religion is a bad thing.  Religion is a defining character for many people. I think if we were more religious we wouldnt have some of the issues we have today.  That does not mean that we should teach that in school though. That just means that parents should have an active part in their childrens lives and teach them these beliefs.  I too believe that prayer never hurt anyone, but with so many religions here in the states, I think that would either teach acceptance or create hostilites.  Acceptance and understanding are of course good things to achieve, but all to often it is the hostilities that are happening.  This would just be another reason to single someone or a group out in schools.  We already have enough of that I think.

I watched this video also.. I am not sure whether he is saying that he is of muslim faith or that he is making a comment of how everyone is assuming his mulim faith? Immediately after saying that, he said something about them makeing connections to being muslim.  As always.. politicans talk in circles! One never knows what the meaning is or what they are saying or not saying! Frustrating!

She has her good and bad points.. Yes it is great that she is not afraid to throw other politians under the bus for over spending.. and it is good that she will stand fast to her convictions and beliefs. I just wonder what will change or what she will have changed in the pro-life arena.  Her own daughter is pregnant and not wanting to keep the child, yet she is making that choice for her by not allowing her to abort and there have even been talks that she is forcing a marriage to save face.  There is a time to look out the window and a time to look in the mirror.  You cant change what has already happened, but she could admit that maybe her parenting style is what lead to this happening.

Conservatives tend to believe that "abstinence only" should be taught in schools, and that simply not talking about a problem will make sure it never happens.  I personally dont want someone in the whitehouse who has this view.  We already have too many teen parents. These are children who dont know the first thing about taking care of themselves let alone a child.  I know these are things you learn as you experience them, but these are supposed to be our future.. and we are not molding them to make good choices.

This is not the only issue that is lacking for her.. there has been a clear and concise limit to education programs in schools. Religion has no place in schools and teaching the "creation theory" is just plain wrong.  Let everyone believe what they will, but that is a families choice whether or not to introduce religion to a child, not the local, state or federal governments.  If that is allowed, what will be next?  That is why we have public and private schools. If you want your child introduced to any type of religion, find a school that teaches your beliefs.

These of course are just subjects that mean something to me.. there are other reasons for people whether or not they are for or against McCain/Palin.

I completely agree with DD. Turkish women are no different then any other women, there are good and bad ones. What I have noticed is that there are more Turkish submissive women then I have met American ones, but I have also met many different Turkish women - strong radical feminists, highly educated, independent ones and some manipulative, lazy ones. Overall, Turkish women pay a lot of attention to how they look (really not much different then anywhere else) - as they seem to be very much objectified by Turkish males.

I think this is the same everywhere. There are some that are the intelligent, strong and independant type and also the lazy and manipulative types.. Women are objectified everywhere! What woman doesnt look at the model in the magazine and say I want to be like that!   My previous statement was about mltm´s quote that the girls there see many men to find one that the like the best.  I know that virginity is key there, but it seems everything else goes?

Quoting mltm

I cannot generalize all girls depending just on nationality, but it´s very rare, much rarer than boys that turkish girls date with a foreign guy. It´s not impossible, there are some examples, I saw a few girls who got married to a foreign guy and the guys did not even change their religion, however they were free girls, I mean not religious, drinking alcohol and working girls who got high education as well. Otherwise turkish girls often prefer turkish boys to marry, even being muslim is not enough. So, even if she likes and loves you, she might not prefer to stay with you, because often for turkish girls marriage is the biggest goal in their lives and a serious relationship should lead to marriage,  and they usually want to date with a potential husband. She tries a lot of men to pick the best one among them maybe and she cannot see you as a potential husband. So, she thinks, you are not worth her time and efforts.

But, they are just my assumptions, I just said one of the possible reasons. Maybe the reason is totally different. We do not know anything about this girl. Maybe she just likes dating with men. Where is this girl,  in Turkey or in a foreign country?

In everything that I have read online, it says that Turkish girls are the quiet and loyal type.. My boyfriend has told me that his last three relationships ended because the girl cheated on him.  I am kind of confused on this.. That is done here (the USA) alot by both.. but it seems in reading on here, that Turkish girls are not as nice as they seem.  Just an opinion..  I have only met one Turkish girl and that is my boyfriends sister.. she is of course.. very sweet.

I think you are worrying unnecessarily.  You are unlikely to be in contact with faeces or faecal matter or contaminated water (Hep A) - unless you are nursing; you are unlikely to be subjected to an outbreak of Hep B virus ( more likely to happen in China) or are you going to be exposed to someone bodily fluids who you don´t know? (Hep C) (Including blood transfusions).

If you have had your tetanus jabs you should be fine too, not planning on rose pruning or gardening are you? {#lang_emotions_bigsmile}

Thanks. I was hoping that I wouldnt have to deal with any of that.  My mom told me to check that.. but she also thinks everyone in the ME walks around with guns too.. So this was just a precaution on my part.

Your welcome, If they know this about you, then it might be ok.  I think it will depend on how modern the family is that you have been staying with though.  Even here in the US that would still be viewed as a romantic gesture. You might want to ask her parents first also and maybe explain to them yourself before you decide. If they dont mind, then I would say go for it.  Just make your intentions clear to them.

I dont think this is a Turkish specific question.  I think in many cultures this would be recieved as unacceptable unless it is a child or something like that.  Your intentions would be questioned no matter what country you were in.  Not a good idea unless you have romantic intentions.  Just my thoughts.

I am going to Turkey in 19 days (so excited!) and while looking for things that I need to be getting ready, I seen that there are some extra vaccinations that are recommened.  Malaria being one of them.. is this true?  There were a whole list of cities named..

Malaria in Turkey: prophylaxis is recommended for the provinces of Adana, Adryaman, Batman, Bingol, Bitlis, Diyarbakar, Elazig, Gaziantep, Hakkari, Hatay, Icel, Kahraman Maras, Kilis, Mardin, Mus, Osmaniyeh, Sanliurfa, Siirt, Sirnak, and Van, chiefly in the south and southeastern parts of the country. Peak transmission occurs from May to October. The drug of choice is chloroquine, taken once weekly in a dosage of 500 mg, starting one-to-two weeks before arrival and continuing through the trip and for four weeks after departure. Chloroquine may cause mild adverse reactions, including gastrointestinal disturbance, headache, dizziness, blurred vision, and itching, but severe reactions are uncommon. Insect protection measures are advised for areas of malaria risk.

Is Malaria that big of a risk?  I am going to Adana but will also be in Mersin and Cappadokia as well as Istanbul of course.  If this is something that I should truely get, then I will of course. But if the risk is low,  then I would like to skip this, as I kind of have a hatred for needles.  Does anyone on here know if that is a serious risk? Or has anyone heard about people actually getting this?  Thanks in advance.

Thanks Pansi.. I will ask him about hobbies.  I was planning on taking something for everyone there.. Her gift was the only problem as I know him and his sister very well.  I have only talked to her a few times and even then it was translated for us and not face to face of course.  I am just worried that I would take something too small or something too big you know?  He says she is expecting to meet her daughter in law not just a visitor, so I am kind of nervous!

Hi everyone, I am reltively new to this site, but am wondering some things.  My boyfriend is living in Adana, and I will be going there at the end of September.  We are talking about marriage and rather serious things, and his family knows this.  They are looking forward to meeting me, but I am nervous.  Add to this that tonight he tells me that when I come there, I should bring his mom a gift.  I am not sure what kind to bring. He is not very helpful on the topic, but just says that I should bring something.. a little help here would be appreciated.  I dont know the customs there and we will be staying there for 2 weeks.  So is this like a hostess gift since we are staying in her house?  Or is this something more since we are talking of getting engaged?  Any help would be appreciated.

Teşekkürler ederim

Queent,

Don´t worry. This lesson is for complete beginners. It is not a high level course. Any complete beginner can join. Just check the first message in this topic to find out the lesson time.

I will arrange repeating sessions for the same lessons in case people from different time zones want to pick a more suitable time. I will also repeat the lessons over time once in a week or two so people who missed the lessons in the past will be able to join another one.

You can imagine this as a cinema movie. It will be shown in the morning and afternoon so you can pick any of them. It will also repeat after a week or two so newcomers can see it as well.

Right now the only thing that I´m interested is enough attendence. As soon as we have enough interest I will announce the lesson times.

This is awesome! I hope to be able to catch one of the repeats as I work alot during the day.
