A TIME FOR DRUNKEN HORSES

Former assistant director to Abbas Kiarostami and star of Samira Makhmalbaf´s Blackboards, Bahman Ghobadi makes his directorial debut with this gritty, documentary-like look at Kurdish orphans struggling to survive. Shot in the village where the filmmaker grew up, the film unsentimentally depicts how children are packed in trucks and driven to the city to perform such menial jobs as wrapping parcels or, more likely, carrying large boxes like pack mules. Though Ayoub is all of 12 years old, he has become the head of the household, which includes his severely disabled older brother -- who is also deathly ill. In order to pay for an operation that might prolong his life, Ayoub joins a group of smugglers who traffic truck tires to Iraq. Negotiating landmines and dodging border guards, they struggle to get their overburdened mules through snow covered mountains by plying them with alcohol. Later, the eldest sister agrees to marry an Iraqi Kurd, under the belief that the groom´s family will pay for the operation. This film was screened at the 2000 Cannes and Toronto film festivals.

Who, may I ask has seen this movie?????

Across from the Theodosian Wall in Istanbul is an old cemetery, in this neighborhood I visited the legendary Greek Church,

Zoodochos Pege was founded over a spring in the reign of the Emperor Leo (457-74); it has remained in Greek hands despite the conquest of the city and is about 500m beyond the city walls. The present church dates from 1833. An interesting legend surrounds the spring: it is said that a monk was frying fish there when he was told the city had fallen. He commented that there was as much chance of the city falling to the Turks as his fish jumping back into the water, at which the half fried fish leapt from his pan into the water ! Fish still swim there today, though the half fried one has not been spotted.

Peace in country Peace in world ...M.K.ATATURK

Mevlana Celalettin´s words:
"gel, gel, ne olursan ol yine gel.
ister kâfir, ister mecusi, ister puta tapan ol yine gel.
bizim dergâhýmýz, ümitsizlik dergâhý deðildir.
yüz kere tövbeni bozmuþ olsan da yine gel..."

"Come, come, whoever you are.
Wonderer, worshipper, lover of leaving.
It doesn´t matter.
Ours is not a caravan of despair.
Come, even if you have broken your vow
a thousand times
Come, yet again, come, come

Most of what they recovered were these fantastic mosaics depicting scenes from Greek/Roman myths.

Pilgrims come from all over to visit Sanliurfa, which according to some, is the birthplace of Abraham. It is also purported to be site of his famous near-assassination by Nero, and pools of fish mark the spot where he landed after escaping Nero´s furnace. Everyone who visits here makes a point of feeding the sacred fish, and legend has it that anyone who catches one will die or go blind, depending on who you ask.

These are the fattest, most overfed fish in Turkey, maybe anywhere, and yet, when food is dropped into the water, they fight frantically over every morsel as if they were on the brink of starvation.

Yes, that is a man in a lavender headscarf. Many men wear them.
Take a side trip to Harran, another claimant to Abraham´s life story (he is considered a major prophet in Islam). It has a dry and dusty middle-of-nowhere feel to it, near the Syrian border with more Arabic spoken than Turkish.
