I have a Turkish "nephew" who is now one year old.  My Turkish is improving but I want to be able to talk to my nephew when I visit.

Can anyone suggest some rhymes that I can share with a child aged between 1 and 2?  I once asked a similar question and someone kindly gave me a link to a website.  However, I would also like suggestions for action rhymes or little games to play with a baby.  Even simole sentences . . .  what is it Turkish people say to babies to keep them amused?  I am taking my duties as a teyze very seriously

Quoting white-wolf

It is called "Hashashli". and traditonally done in Agean and Middle-Black Sea regions.

It is a kind of chorek/pastry/bread and quite yummy. Flour, water, salt, oil and pounded hashash seeds are used to make it.

Hashash seeds are a normal vegeterian material used in traditional dishes/pastries. AND IT IS NOT A DRUG. There are two types of Hashash seeds; one black and grey. Both types are used in the kitchens if they are pounded.

My mother does it quite frequently and I love it. I hope my wife will learn it. Althought She learned to bake "Keshkek", I do not think she will learn to bake "Hashasli".

(And "Baklali Yaprak Sarmasi") these three are famous Amasya dishes.

Thanks WW.  I was quite sure I wasn´t eating a drug, but my friends were teasing me.

Quoting Roswitha

For Canli and Peacetrain: The Secret of Sahur

Why is it that some people is more energetic during Ramadhan, while another is weaker? The answer to this very question will help us to not only become fitter but we may be able to lose weight in the process, insyaAllah.

The answer is “Sahur”. People from Kedah call it “Soq” . There’s a reason why “sahur” is very recommended to people who fast. In fact, that’s the only difference from our fast and the non-muslim’s fast.

Let me try to explain it.. We all know breakfast is the most important meals of the day. Yes it provides us more energy to start our day, but there is another secret to it. Breakfast actually gives signal to our body that we are not in starvation.

You see, our body is very clever. When we are starving, the body does not react by burning more fat. It actually react by lowering down its metabolism and burn less fat to preserve them. That is why we are often weaker when we are hungry for a long time.

So Sahur, will indirectly signal the body that we are not starving ourself. And thus the body’s metabolism will switch to normal mode. Which means it burns more fat and giving us more energy to start the day. Thus we will be fitter and stronger the whole day. And since the metabolism rate is not slowed down, more fat will be burn and eventually the weight loss (Of course other factors must be taken into consideration, such as exercise, type of food etc)

 Thanks for your trouble Ros.

Dear Handsom,

I don´t think bones and muscle will be affected if some exercise is taken.

I don`t remember the Muslims` in Britain flooding into the streets and making a riot to have the sharia laws in there.

Quote: libralady

No I have not noticed riots, just the odd bombing or two.

Libra, your reply to Tam´s statement seems to be inferring that the bombs were some kind of method to force the introduction of sharia law in the UK.  I never read about that at the time.  If your remark was some kind of "tongue in cheek remark" then I don´t think it was in good taste.

non-Nationals

I´m not sure I admire this terminology.  There are very many muslims living in this country who have British passports.  Many from Commonwealth countries were invited to the UK generations ago.  Remember how these countries became part of our Commonwealth.

Quote: libralady

so do not welcome other religions forcing their laws or beliefes on people who don´t want them.

As far as I´m aware, non Muslims will not be subjected to these laws.  As the Beth Din is there for the Jewish community, so Sharia will be there for the Muslim community, should they wish to take advantage of that facility.  I don´t think it will be compulsory for Muslims to use Sharia.

Quote: libralady

If they want to use this as a method of arbitration between themselves, which I suspect already goes on, then fine, but it should no way enter into our legal system.

I haven´t had time to research further , but it´s my understanding that whatever decisions are made have to be ratified by our country´s legal system.

Quote:libralady

I can´t see that if we went to Pakistan for instance, that we would be able to introduce our divorce laws so why should they introduce their laws here in the UK?

You are assuming all Muslims are not British citizens.  I should imagine if you became a citizen of another country you would have some say in what goes on there.  That said, I don´t think the "hypothetical" scenario you mention is a good argument.

Quoting CANLI

Cool,i missed that Turkish part, thx geniuda, but also then i meant also for other language, mine was Arabic.

I was thinking yesterday that there haven´t been many Turkish titles and I was going to suggest it. Ha ha even I had forgotten I specified it at the beginning.

I guess it won´t hurt to have other languages too because that way we learn something of films etc from other countries.

And let´s not forget plays and poems in the ´literature´ category.
