479 children in prison with convicted mothers, data show

26 April 2011, Tuesday / TODAY´S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL

According to data released by the Ministry of Justice, 479 children are currently in prison with their convicted mothers, the Akşam daily reported yesterday.

Nearly 2,500 of the prison population in Turkey are women, many of whom serve their prison terms with their children due to financial difficulties. According to the Ministry of Justice data, as of November 2010 there were 479 children in such situations. The children are not allowed to stay in prison after they reach the age of 6. Experts say these children do not want to leave the prison after that age and that this causes them to commit crimes to be sent back.

The daily reported on a recent documentary titled “Prison Garden,” which covers the stories of children who stay in prison with their mothers. The documentary examined such cases at the Denizli Bozkurt Women´s Prison, the Ankara Sincan Women´s Prison and the İstanbul Üsküdar Paşa Kapısı Women´s Prison. In the documentary, convicted mothers, prison wardens, guards, psychologists and sociologists were asked what can be done for these children. Speaking to the daily, the director of the documentary, Funda Tan Arman, said they managed to create a documentary that stays away from agitation and proposes solutions. She said they watched the finished documentary for the first time with convicts at the women´s penal facility in Denizli.

Some prisons have kindergartens for children between the ages of 3 and 6 where they can play with other children. However, those below the age of 3 have to spend the day in the prison cell with their mothers. Many of the prisons do not allow toys in the cells.

Experts quoted in the documentary say it is impossible to separate these children from their mothers, so conditions for these children should be improved. They say these children should live not like convicts but like their peers.

Note : Prison is not a place for children..Its so sad . I know its not easy to seperate them from their mothers but still doesnt sound right to have kids in prison. There must be another solution for those kids.

Turkey begins dismantling monument

26 April 2011, Tuesday / AP, ANKARA

Workers have begun dismantling a giant sculpture meant to promote reconciliation between Turkey and Armenia.

Türkiye ile Ermenistan arasında barışa katkıda bulunması amacıyla işçiler dev anıtı parçalara ayırmaya başladılar.

Television footage on Monday showed a crane bringing down one of the two heads of the 35-meter (115-foot) stone sculpture which features a divided human figure, near the two nations´ border.

The hulking monument had been criticized in Turkey because it overshadows an Islamic shrine in the area. During a visit to the site in January, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called it a "freak," prompting moves by local officials to have it removed.

British music superstar Elton John has revealed that he and his partner have chosen pop diva Lady Gaga to be their baby boy´s godmother, as he spoke of his joy at being a father.

"Yes, yes she is," John told ABC´s Barbara Walters when she asked him if the outlandish singer was the godmother of his son, Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John, in an interview late Friday.

"When you get to the real person underneath, there´s a very simple New York girl who loves her parents. I love her to death and a lot of people said, ´oh, you know, that´s crazy,´ but they don´t know her and we do,” the singer said.

Zachary was born Dec. 25 to a surrogate for John, 64, and his partner 48-year-old Canadian filmmaker David Furnish, and the couple told ABC of their delight at having a son, and their determination not to spoil him.

"I knew I´d feel joy but it was the most relaxing thing that´s ever happened to me," John said.

"We change him, we bath him, we feed him and we read him a story every night," said John of the couple´s routine. "And we take him to lunch."

But the millionaire singer said he was determined his four-month-old would learn about values, even though he was being brought up in the lap of luxury.

"The worst thing you can do to a child, and I´ve seen it happen so many times, is the silver spoon," John said. "Being the child of a famous person is very difficult and we´re very well aware of the pitfalls of that."

Furnish, who married John in 2005 after 12 years together, agreed. "Our life might be very luxurious, but it´s all come from hard work," he said.

"Both Elton and I have sort of earned everything we´ve done in our careers and furthered our educations through our own drive and our own ambitions and we want Zachary to be exactly the same sort of way,” Furnish said.

By turning to a surrogate mother, the couple followed in the footsteps of "Sex in the City" star Sarah Jessica Parker and her actor husband Matthew Broderick who had twin girls by a surrogate mother in 2009.

Latino pop star Ricky Martin also used a surrogate to have twin boys before announcing he was gay.
