Turkish names

|
It struck me before that there are a lot of very expressive (and beautiful!) names in Turkish.
But sometimes I do feel pity for a person, like the boxer Satılmış Varlık ("Sold Existence") for example.
A friend told me that that is the guy's real name.. I have to wonder what his parents were thinking when they named him?

I will tell you what his parents were thinking when they named him. "Satılmış" ("Satı" for girl children)is also one of those expressive names you mean.
It means: a boy baby who has been devoted to "ermişler" before his birth("ermiş":the one who has become with God through self-denial / you call them "saints" in English)in order to wish him a long life.(It is believed that "ermişler" keep living in a different dimension after death.)
You had better feel pity for your friend not because of his ignorance ,but for his insistence on staying ignorant.
He could have looked up in a dictionary giving the meanings of person names instead of making fun of a person's name.

Sounds like an honest mistake to me - why are you so rude?! This is TURKISH CLASS - we are hear to learn, not be experts in Turkish 
It seems you can't joke about anything Turkish here

If you read over the original post you can see I was not rude at all. (Even if I had been you weren't the one who was supposed to say that)
My previous post didn't have anything got to do with Elisa.
If you don't see anything wrong with making fun of a person's name, ears or weight I have nothing to say.

Now you are generalising eh? I certainly DO NOT think its funny to tease people because of physical appearances. However, if they have a funny name then yes, I do sometimes laugh, as long as I don't hurt anyone's feelings. We certainly have some crazy names in the UK hehe!

Of course you can reply, however you aren't in such a position to entitle yourself to call me rude with a thing that hasn't got anything to do with you.

You couldn't get the point, could you?, I thought as much.(Look! you can say I am rude with the preceding expression.)
OK. Then let me explain it: The one who had made fun of the name "şatılmış" wasn't Elisa herself, but one of her friend. One can easily deduce from her expression that the friend of her who had told Elisa "satılmiş" means "sold-out" was most likely a Turk.

As I have mentioned in my previous post if you do nothing wrong with making fun of people I don't have anyting to say.
