Quoting vineyards: For example, I wouldn't suggest a UK citizen to do something to abolish monarchy and nobility in their country no matter how ridiculously outdated those concepts are in this century.
|
Ouh I wish you would suggest it Vineyards!!!! I think they should all be kicked out - we could save ourselves millions each year!

Quoting vineyards: Insulting Ataturk is a constitutional offense in our country and this matter is deemed in the purview of the Grand National Assembly which is the only legislative body in Turkey. We do not make laws based on the wishes or suggestions of the citizens of other nations no matter how much better they think they know how national heroes should be commemorated.
For example, I wouldn't suggest a UK citizen to do something to abolish monarchy and nobility in their country no matter how ridiculously outdated those concepts are in this century.

this reminds me the times of stalin.
why do you think the other citizens would want to suggest things you say above? it actually doesnt hurt other nationalities. but to people like me it would be weird not being able to criticise anyone on this person (tho i dont have any intention to do so in regards to ataturk).

Atatürk was never a dictator. So do not compare him with any dictator. The ones who say that he was a dictator are the ones who either do not know him or the ones who know him and do not like him.
I could forgive a foreign person who insults Atatürk because of ignorance, but I could never forgive a Turk who does not like him.
Like it or not, but as long as -and that will be forever as Atatürk wished- Turkish Republic lives, insulting him will stay as a crime.

I have no reason to insult Ataturk, nor do I think he was a dictator. However, I do wonder if, since his death, a "regime" has been formed in his name which refuses to "move on" the way Ataturk would have done. The irony is that in some ways it seems a rather paranoid regime, fearful of change, religion-like in its worship of one man -exactly the kind of thing that Ataturk tried to reform

No freedom of speech, huh. Do you know how many posts I have read from Turkish citizens bashing Bush and Blair. What hypocrisy we have here in the Turkish Class. However, I don't believe in criticing or sharing my opinions about any countries leader or figures, as it may oppose an insult and lead to an argument with another member. If it was a crime here in the U.S. to insult a current or former leader, every media, comic and late night host would be imprisoned.

Quoting vineyards: Femme fatal I don't know what super civilized environment you live in but I really don't appreciate to be likened to Stalin. Furthermore, there is a very big difference between criticizing and insulting.
Would you appreciate if I included a nasty joke about Borat raving about Kazakh ways. So, please read carefully before making such absurd analogies. |
pleaseeeeeeee, dont threaten me with BORAT, i rather like HIM.
my civilized environment is me myself!
you and mltm should read my post more carefully, because i didnt compare ataturk to stalin, i compared the cults (made by people).
well in those old times you'd be sentenced to a death insulting/criticising mr stalin(pbuh).
and for the words : criticize and insult. i think you turks take everything critical regarding aataturk as an insult, which is not healthy. just because ataturk isnt God.
never before on TC i read an insult on him. so what is the problem?
