+1000000 I think its a cultural thing maybe..I have heard this so many times from Turkish friends here, advising me "why don't you just stay silent instead of arguing...most people there don't know what they are talking about anyway".
Well....I am not good at staying silent!

yes, it is cultural
its better to have quiet and nice sheep than talking/arguing humans.
and one thing to note: this proverb mainly refers to women its better for a woman not to take part in discussions, what for? they are anyway brainless.

speech is silver but silence is gold (Söz gümüşse sükut altındır)..it doesnt mean that u should be silence it means that u should know when u listen or when u will talk.it says that if u dont know anthing about a subject,stop speaking up and listen then u will learn more...So this thread is for u

its rather for you, because you listen to this proverb and keep silent because you dont know much on subjects at all and have nothin to contribute (therefore you are often silent),

In answer to the original question, I think we should just let them sleep. Reading today's translations I don't think anything you say will make a difference.
