Rain,

İ am with you,Turkish are different, and i am sure with you too that you must be proud cause you are Turkish

But i want to say something here,

İ've noticed from so many posts here from Turkish people that, they try to justify themselves, why they are different!

Or why Turkiye is different than West ?

Yes Türkiye is different, and there where is its beauty,
İts DİFFERENT

İts not like the West, its the country of mixed cultures

Why try to say ,noo we are like the West ?

İts not hard, its easy really to be like the West,it just will take time,'in my opinion'

But the hard thing is for the West to be like Türkiye.

You really don't need to justify your traditions, your customs !

For what,and why ?

Who loves Türkiye, loves her for the way she is,for being different

And who don't like ,then....

Türkiye won't change and not in need to be justified !

İts unique this way

And its unique with her people too .

You realy don't need to say,''noo we don't do such this or that, Türkiye is a good country not bad ''

Türkiye is Türkiye ....Land of mixed Cultures

And she won't ever change.. 'i hope'

There are lots of countries in the West, but just one mixed culture country ,just one Türkiye

So don't justify being Unique

Well said Canli! Why would people be on this site if they didn't love Turkey anyway??? I am concerned that Rain has so much anger in him and is very defensive of Turkey, for what reason? We are not here to attack Turkey - we love it.

My point exactly aenigma,

And who doesn't love Her,or feel offensive by its Traditions,so simply ,don't go there !
And who see Turkish as dishonest people,then...don't deal with them !

But Turkish are people, like all other people, there are the goods, and the bads
Not all good, and not all bad.

No need to be defensive about something doesn't need to be defended at the first place !

heidilovesosman..yes of course they can be killed during army duty..they are soldiers they can be put anywhere..but then u could also be killed walking out of your front door..or across the road

i think rain was just trying to put across his pride about being turkish rather than defending turkey..if people are proud of their country then good luck to them

In turkey who die during millatry duty they direct go paradice so most of turkish men like to be army fo the country...turkish men mst be army... not like europea or Usa give money to be army... last time i watched in the news (bbc)1 uk soldier killed himslf coz he dont want to go iraq.. in .iraq so many usa army they cut their finger to go back theircountry coz they so scre to die.. this is wht make turkish army special all around the world..

I think Rain should be commended for speaking his views so openly. I notice that no other Turkish classmates ever challenge his views, and can only assume that such fundamentalist opinions are the "norm".

So what does this mean? Does this mean that all the wonderful, warm, Turkish friends I have are hiding these views from me, that they are in fact racist and will only ever judge me on my nationality?

If this is correct, then I am so sad to discover that indeed "love is blind" and that my love for Turkia is such

Atatürk's Address to the Turkish Youth
(Atatürk'ün Genclige Hitabesi)

You, the Turkish youth! Your primary duty is to forever protect and defend the Turkish independence and Turkish Republic. This is the mainstay of your existence and of your future.

This foundation is your most precious treasure in the future, as well, there will be malevolents, within and abroad, who will seek to deny your birthright. If one day you are compelled to defend your independence and the republic, you shall not reflect on the conditions and possibilities of the situation in which you find yourself, in order to accomplish your mission. These conditions and possibilities may appear unfavorable. The adversaries who scheme against your independence and your Republic may be the representatives of a victory without precedent in the world. By force or by ruse, all citadels and all arsenals of our dear fatherland may have been taken; all of its armies may have been dispersed and all corners of the country may have been physically occupied. More distressing and more grievous than all these, those who hold and exercise the power within the country may have fallen into gross error, blunder, and even treason. These holders of power may have even united their personal interests with political ambitions of the invaders. The nation itself may have fallen into privation, and may have become exhausted and desolate.

You, the future sons and daughters of Turkey! Even under such circumstances and conditions, your duty is to redeem Turkish independence and the Republic! The strength you shall need exists in the noble blood flowing through your veins ...

I hope you will understand how the turkish man feel when they were in army....

Rain, I understand that you are only expressing your opinion and thats fine, but you have to understand that other people are just trying to do the same and express their own personal views.

Nobody has said anything against Turkey or the millitary! quite the opposite infact, but for some reason you feel you have to defend Turkey, why?

Saying that Heidi is wrong and that 'all Turkish men want to go to the army' Is a very bold statement to make indeed, and I wonder how you feel that you repressent the voice of 'ALL' Turkish men? From what I can see you are repressenting the opinions of a small minority of Turkey. There are Turkish citizens who love their country, but that doesnt neccessarily mean they want the inconvinience of spending 18 months doing compulsory service, especially when they often have careers, responsibilities and even children.

I have noticed lately, especially in chat that political issues are being bought up constantly! And this thread is a prime example of this. This site is for foreigners who wish to learn Turkish, the fact that so many foreigners are interested in Turkish is an honour to the language! But, I feel there are some members of the site, who seem to think the sole purpose of this site is to infect the mind of foreigners with their fashist, narrow minded, and to some extent racist beliefs!

The stuff I have witnessed in chat lately has been disgusting!

Dear Rain, I think you're mixing things up here a bit. Yes indeed, there are people here for the sole purpose of translations. And there are girls here who have had bad luck with relationships. But that's just one aspect of this site.
On the other hand I'm sure that a lot of people are busy on their own reading about Ottoman history for example. Not everybody feels the need to ask things here, but that doesn't mean that they are not interested in your country's history and culture.
That's the thing with forums, in a month we may be asking you questions about history and you will be wishing you never brought up the history subject!

Well nobody here thinks Turkish men are any different than any other country (well not in a bad way !!). There was an occasion recently when a guy had cheated on his girlfriend and comments were made here. That was ONE incident!!! You need to put things in perspective.

Heidi you have no reason to be apologising!

Rain, I really dont get what point you are trying to make at all! Have you ever thought that if people want to learn about Turkish culture, Families etc that they may rather want to search about these things from resourceful sources rather than listening to the biased preachings of others?

If you want to accuse somebody of using bad language, then I suggest you try the Turkish men in the chatroom, who are always ready to hurl verbal abuse in both English and Turkish at just about anyone who doesnt agree with their preachings.

There seems to be a growing number of members of this site, who are simply here to cause argument, usually of a political nationalistic nature.

I cant believe this all started because Heidi said her boyfriend didnt want to go to the army. If he doesnt want to go then thats his opinion! and iam sure its the opinion of many Turkish men.

He's sent me a nasty private message now - which just shows his true mentallity really, and he's the one telling people that they should watch their language!

It would be perhaps more "successful" and enlightening if we had views from other Turkish men, as it is worrying to see that they never challenge the radical statements made here. It seems some people would rather "sit on the fence"...

Iam not 'changing peoples mind to fight with you', you have already managed that all by yourself. I dont really understand what you want Rain, you commented on Heidi's translation request and you have made alot of VERY bold statements saying that you 'HATE' the West etc in various different threads, and yet you cant understand why people question you. I know you are just expressing yourself, but people are obviously going to question your beliefs, especially when you put them so bluntly.

enlightening of what? military service?
this is really topic that goes nowhere with discussing...

you are a Turkish Citizen and you eat your food here, you are secured with its laws, somehow good or bad... and you have some homeworks to do, like voting and military service for men.

it would be good to have it willingly and paid... but your economy etc... is not avaliable for it... and there is various ways of to get away from it... if sb doesnt wanna do it they can go on that way... their own choice...

so lets stop here discussing it... its getting discussed for years and the service period is decreasing, maybe it will be paid and willingly one day... who knows...
this is not our job to discuss, you vote for people to do it... am i wrong?
