The German government here Friday expressed "great concern" over Turkey's latest incursion into northern Iraq.

Addressing a routine weekly press briefing, German Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Jaeger labelled Turkish military operations in northern Iraq a "not inconsiderable risk of destabilization." "We urge the Turkish government in its fight against terrorism to reduce its steps to the minimum to protect its own people," Jaeger added.

He warned of "further escalation" of the conflict, while urging Ankara's compliance with international law.

Jaeger said also that the German embassy was trying to get in contact with Turkey's national security council.

Around 10,000 Turkish soldiers crossed into Iraq on Thursday evening in a bid to destroy bases of the Kurdish PKK terrorist group.

What would one call a strong, dominant Turkish woman? A sultan! Yes, the word is both masculine and feminine but is only rarely applied to the latter.

Although such a woman is an exception in Turkish society today, she does exist. Actually in western society, one might refer to such a woman as your majesty even if there was no royal connection at all - but this has connotations of mockery. How is it that the Turks came to use the title of sultan in this way?

The Iraqi government has called for Turkey to withdraw its troops from northern Iraq.
A statement by Nuri al-Maliki's government on Sunday urged Turkey "to withdraw its forces from Iraqi soil as soon possible", describing the military operation as "a threat to Iraqi sovereignty".
"The government of Iraq calls on Turkey to respect its sovereignty and unity and considers that the unilateral operation across the border is a threat to the region," the statement said.
It came after Turkey's military warned Iraqi Kurds not to shelter Kurdish fighters fleeing its offensive.
