People consider the military service as an integral part of life. They do not consider somebody is a proper and successful person if he has not performed his military service and instituted a family upon marriage.

Young man who reaches his age of military service has been let free two months before the date on which he will enter military service. In the course of this two month period he is permitted to stroll and enjoy himself.

Young man visits all his relatives, neighbours and friends in the last week, says "good-bye, I am going to perform my military service, forgive me if I may have done anything wrong " to them. Elders whose hands are kissed give presents to him and bid him to go and come back happily. His friends however try to entertain him by organising entertainments day and night with drum and pipe.

On the day of departure of military service all candidates are seen off by his relatives, neighbours and friends under the Turkish flags, with drum and pipe, throwing him high by hands of his friends. Sometimes "Mevlud" is chanted, collective prayers are read, and they wish them have a good journey. Candidates of soldier are advised to perform their military service well, to obey their commanders' orders.

Letters received from son in the course of military service cannot be destroyed, burned, hung at non-visible places. Any action made to the contrary believed to bring bad-luck to the son.

After completion of military service the family cooks "un helvasý" (sweet prepared with flour, butter and sugar) and offers same to all relatives, neighbours and friends. Thus it has been announced to everybody that their son has completed his military service. Then however all relatives, neighbours, friends pay a visit of congratulation to the family. Thus the young man has started a new life, has overthrown an important obstacle in his way towards being a good man.

Leap-Frog “Birdir Bir” (Uzuneşek): This game is played with at least 4 players. First of all two persons among players are elected as “it”. Those elected players stand back to back, hold their knees bending, placing their buttocks one another. Other players jump with parted legs over them one by one. If they fell at the time of jumping they become “it”.

While children jump they say “it is one one, two two , three three, four four..” and continue to jump. The last one however takes his place beside the “it” players after jumping, and then he bents.

While jumping over the “it” sometimes joking actions are made in counting some numbers. For example the seventh player says “my seven is seven, what I eat is kick”, and the “it” is kicked by other players. While the eighth player jumps he says “my eight is hop”, and stands on one foot. Players who will jump after him have to stand on their one foot. The eighth player has the right to cause others who jump after him walk as he wishes. While the ninth player jumps he says “my nine is stop” and immediately after uttering this phrase the other hopping players must stop without moving wherever they are. When the tenth player jumps he says “ my ten is sickle, guns of Fatih”, and then starts blowing “its” backs with his fist.

The game goes on similarly after determining a new “it”.

Ramadan Bairam (Ramazan Bayramı and Sacrifice Bairam (Kurban Bayramı are the major religious festivals. These festivals have a special place and meaning in life of people.

Although celebration of these festivals has been somewhat different from one region to another region, usually celebrations are similar to one another.

Preparations for Bairam start in the form of a general cleaning up in fifteen days advance. Prior to Bairams "Lokma" (a small ball of fried sweet dough) is cooked at "kandil" (holly) nights and distributed to neighbours, children, relatives. At the same night Koran is read and "Fatiha" is presented to soul of deceased persons.

Meals of Bairam are prepared on the day before Bairam. Meals of Bairam consist of bread with walnut, soup, haricot bean, "Sarma" (a dish of minced meat and rice wrapped up in vine leaves), "Yahni" (meat stew with unions), pilaf, pie, "Sütlaç" (rice-milk) and "Baklava" ((Sweet pastry generally cut into diamond-shaped pieces). All members of the family take bath at the night of the day before Bairam. In the morning of Bairam everybody wakes up early and puts on their new dresses for Bairam. Men go to Mosque for Bairam prayer, women start preparing necessary meal.

After the prayer of Bairam men visit graveyard altogether. They read "Fatiha" there both for their own relatives and for all dead persons collectively, pray for them. Then they return home. All family members sit on the table and eat Bairam meal. Some families in other districts have a light breakfast. After the meal hands are washed, and good wishes for Bairam are exchanged among family members starting from the old members of the family. Children are made happy by giving them money. Then children of neighbours, elders, friends are visited and their Bairam is congratulated. In the course of congratulation hands of old persons are kissed, eyes of children are kissed.

Cologne, chocolate, "baklava" are offered to visitors who
come for Bairam.
