Accountant, emeðin için çok teþekkürler.

As a grateful learner, (after reading A: tenses/zamanlar,) I thought I should tell you about some things I noticed.

Mary usually drinks tea or milk in the mornings, but this morning she is drinking coffee.

(Mary sabahlarý genellikle çay ya da süt içer, fakat bu sabah kahve içiyor.).

9. By the time we finish this book, we will have learnt 500 new words.

(Bu kitabý bitirdiðimiz zaman, 500 yeni öðrenmiþ lacaðýz ) (maybe alacaðýz or olacaðýz ??

10. By the týme we get to Istanbul, I´ll have been driving for 10 hours.

(Ýstanbul´a geldiðimizde /geldiðimiz zaman, 10 saat araba sürüyor olacaðým)

Thank you also for giving so many examples with translations.

Sorry, unfortunately my Turkish is only at a basic level.

I enjoyed your examples, and found a few more small errors that I have added to my previous post.

It will take me a while to work through them all !!!

Thank you again for this valuable post for learners. Big smile

(I will delete parts from the other post once you have made any necessary corrections.)

As I was going through this, there are the odd spelling mistakes, typing errors, omissions, and translation errors.

This tends to suggest to me that hopefully all this is accountant´s own work, and a major effort to try and help learners. Maybe if the Turkish checks out OK, and the format is revised slightly, it should be added as Accountant´s lessons in the Learn Turkish section.

Just my thoughts!

Would you rather have tea or coffee: Çay mý yoksa kahve mi tercih edersiniz?

The two questions above do not carry the same meaning, hence are not correct translations of one another,

The question in Turkish is after the drinker´s choice between tea and coffee. The way this question is asked rules out the possibility of a third alternative. Its correct translation into English would have been "Would you prefer to drink (have) tea or coffee? ".

The question in English, on the other hand, is to rstablish whether that specific drinker´ s choice is  tea or coffee - in a group where rest of the guests have already opted for,  say Coke. Its correct translation into Turkish would have been "Cay veya kahveyi tercih mi ederdiniz?".

I would go to movie the movies/cinema except if it were wasn´t WAS on a wednesday : O gün Çarþamba deðilse, sinemaya giderdim.

Hmmm.... I disagree with this first correction. Using a "was not" form against "except" is incorrect as it creates a double negative.

The original usage of "except if it were..." was correct in British English; "except if it was..." would be more normal in US English.

I agree with you that ´except if it were´ is more correct in British English (we´re all becoming too Americanised!!) but as the original Turkish sentence says ´o gün çarþamba deðilse´ - the sentence says ´I would got to the cinema if it wasn´t on Wednesday´ - or am I getting totally confused!

Trudy - I was not criticising at all! I was merely pointing out that there IS a difference. Neither of them is more "correct".

Being Australian, I would tend to use "were" instead of "was" myself. Cool

No, I think you´ve actually nailed it!

I would go to the cinema...

... if it was NOT on Wednesday

... except if it WAS/WERE on Wednesday

Both of these sentences mean exactly the same thing.  (I like the first one better though as it is easier to understand).

It looks great but there further we go the more spelling (and sometimes meaning mistakes) there are..

Accountant, maybe it´s worth reading through all of them again, I´m sure you´ll notice them yourself too..

On example of a meaning mistake:

- WHILE: ÝKEN
While I was going to Üsküdar, I found a purse :Üsküdar’a giderken, bir mendil buldum.

A mendil is not a purse but a handkerchief..

Anyway thanks for the hard work, and I definitely learned some new words from it!

 TENSES AND SITUATIONS

Bir gün bu romaný okumam gerekecekti.I should have been read this novel one day (sorry - this doesn´t make sense in English) --> One day it was going to be necessary for me to read this novel. (considering this, I decided to already read it today, since I will need it in the future)

Bu romaný okumuþ olmazdým.I cannot have to read this novel  (no sense in English) Literally: I wouldnt be someone who has read this novel, meaning --> I wouldn´t have read (and finished) this book (if it wasnt because I had to read it at school) Like:

Q: Neden bu romaný okudun? Çok sýkýcý bir kitap.

A: Benim zamanýmda lisede öðrencilere bu romaný okutuyorlardý. Yoksa bu romaný okumuþ olmazdým.

Q: Why did you read this novel? It such a boring book.

A:  In my time, they let the students read this novel in highschool. Otherwise I wouldnt have read this book (its a finished action).  (not sure if my turkish is correct though)

Bu romaný okuyabileceðimi söyledim.I said I could read this novel (and, isn´t this future tense? - ´I said I will be able to read this novel´ yes, but I guess ´could´ is correct as well:

´Doktor iki hafta sonra koþabileceðimi söyledi´ - The doctor said that I will be able to run in 2 weeks.

´Patronum gidebilecðimi söyledi´ - My boss said I could leave (like, giving permission to go)

Bu romaný okuyacaðým her ne kadar zor olsa da.I will read this novel difficult it is at first (I think it should be ´as difficult as it is at first´ no matter how difficult it will be

I copied these from LiRs corrections and added some of my thoughts.

Amcam, akþam yemeðinden sonra bir fincan kahve alýr.

Note that this bad Turkish, as spoken by those who are overimpressed by American films they watch.

In Turkish, coffee is "drunk", like many other drinks or refreshments....but never "taken" like  a  birth control pill.
