Relax,no need to be offended. You made 4 mistakes in one sentence. This can happen to any of us and all of us.It is not because your Turkish is poor, but probably because you do it rashly. And you are still lucky... what if it was gulbil?Scared

Yes Ý was offended because Ý can´t stand injustice which Ý think it is because there where only small mistakes, but my translation was understandable !  This is why i think it isnt nice neither necessary to say my reply doenst sound right at all I will get you

(also there were actually only 2 mistakes hala wasnt wrong Ý just happen to not have that punctuation mark from the a on my keyboard. And you call a comma a mistake, but it doesnt make the word meaning different)

No need to feel like that Melike.  It´s not that you are not allowed  to express your irritations but it is better if you have a disagreement with someone to sort it out via pm - otherwise it just detracts from the content of the post.

The reason I came here is learning Turkish ...I prefer to do it in peace and with respectable correction of mistakes , not with comments of some irritating ironical wiseacre , who definitely is not friendly and positive ( as I have noticed while reading older forums)... so no need to keep her from leaving ...yurtta sulh, cihanda sulh

And you are very right and correct Kailin.  Unfortunately, this is Turkish Class - and although its the best Turkish Language site on the web - you have to accept that nothing is simple here!  Arguments are a big part of the site - it´s what keeps us interesting.  However, as I said to Melike, on translation forums, it is better to keep translation disagreements to pms

Melike - your are not a moderator or admin - it has nothing to do with you how someone enters a forum. Kailin is entitled to her opinion and I am sure she will find plenty of people to translate for her amongst those who were doing so long before you arrived on the scene.

You made 4 mistakes in one sentence.

Hese (Hese´nin)neden hapishane´de(hapishanede) olduðunu hala(hâlâ) bilmiyorum, sen (nedeni)(nedenini) biliyor musun ?

1. hâlâ: still

2. hala: paternal aunt

However, it´s not a mistake to write ´hala´ when it means still. Like most Turkish speakers, I never write ´hâlâ´ as it isn´t worth, spending the extra time to insert the letter â. It may be necessary to write ´hâlâ´ if writing ´hala´ would cause a confusion in terms of meaning. In the sentence above, however, it´s obvious that ´hala´ doesn´t mean aunt.

Where is the letter â on turkish keyboard? Or on this site when you right the messages near the other turkish characters ?

You have just saved me hundreds of hours when preparing power points for my lectures at Bahçeþehir University: it takes ages to put the hat on the a every time I write kar or karlýlýk so my students don´t get profit and snow confused!

I just checked the tdk website, and you are right. They do show hala with hats as meaning still. But they also give hala without hats meaning hala with hats. Maybe I need to paste it for this to make sense:

Ooops what have I caused here! It´s been a while since I signed in my Turkish Class account...

Sorry Melike, you´re right, our translations are more or less the same. The part that doesn´t sound right at all is the nedeni part, which is in brackets anyway. I am sorry I didn´t consider what I said might have upset you.

As for why nedeni is not right, object of the verb bilmek needs to take the accusative, so it should be nedenini bilmiyorum...

I am sorry again to have upset you. I didn´t mean to. Seems like you´re learning Turkish, and you´re doing a very good job.

Best wishes,

Sumru

TDK is funny. some years ago they decided not to use the "^". So everyone got used to not using it. then they decided to use again since it causes a lot of confusions.
