Susie it is usually the case.
The problem is that the governments spent so many years on both sides doing propaganda for political reasons that any Turk or Greek who never have the chance to know in person a Greek or Turk believes.
It is different in United States since we have the chance to really know each other
I have many great Greek friends whom I trust like I trust my own people and from where I live, the Turkish community and Greek community help each other in many aspects.
I can show you a Greek company which is fanatically supported by Turks and the reverse is true.
My company even uses me with Greek clients because of this fact. They prefer to send me for negotiations and our Greek clients specifically ask for me for assistance. By the way, I am talking about small/medium sized businesses here.
We have so much in common that it still shocks me

It is a sad story
They did too much damage, I mean the politicians, and they introduced both sides as monsters. The saddest thing is/was people believed without questioning because they are/were told so while they are/were young enough to accept everything their families/schools told them to believe.
But I guess it is rapidly changing with globalization since people have the chance to do business around the globe and so know/experience relations with each other in person.
Both governments also gave up feeding that kind of propaganda realizing that it is silly and no more benefits since majority of the people are beginning to laugh at them instead of taking their silly propagandas seriously.
But in your case, there are still Turks and Greeks who believe that we are enemies. When you ask them if they ever known a Greek or a Turk, drink together, or hang out together, etc..; the answer is almost always the same; NO. As you mentioned, when you asked them then why this hate is, you probably get something like; “My grand mom told me once… “Or “everybody knows how come you don’t!!†etc...
It is true that in history, we both make mistakes but it is sad that some people insist on basing their beliefs of nations on mistakes. Some people can only want to see the mistakes and prefer to live in past. For this kind of people, saying that you love a Turk or Greek is a strike to what they believe.
I have one friend here like you guys. He fell in love with this gorgeous, wonderful Greek girl and they are getting married. Although he is willing to live in Greece, both of them agreed not to do so, she found a teaching job in UK, and my friend thinks that his future wife’s career is important than his own (mostly because he does not want to make her family think that he ruined her carrier by insisting on staying in United States so he is ruining his, love is a strange thing) so they will be living in UK.
Anyway, as I said I have many great Greek friends that I will not change it for millions (I guess I am a capitalist, the first thing I can thing of as an exchange value was dollars, Arrggh I hate myself hehe ).
