Quoting HomeSick:

It is a sad story

They did too much damage, I mean the politicians, and they introduced both sides as monsters. The saddest thing is/was people believed without questioning because they are/were told so while they are/were young enough to accept everything their families/schools told them to believe.

But I guess it is rapidly changing with globalization since people have the chance to do business around the globe and so know/experience relations with each other in person.

Both governments also gave up feeding that kind of propaganda realizing that it is silly and no more benefits since majority of the people are beginning to laugh at them instead of taking their silly propagandas seriously.

But in your case, there are still Turks and Greeks who believe that we are enemies. When you ask them if they ever known a Greek or a Turk, drink together, or hang out together, etc..; the answer is almost always the same; NO. As you mentioned, when you asked them then why this hate is, you probably get something like; “My grand mom told me once… “Or “everybody knows how come you don’t!!” etc...

It is true that in history, we both make mistakes but it is sad that some people insist on basing their beliefs of nations on mistakes. Some people can only want to see the mistakes and prefer to live in past. For this kind of people, saying that you love a Turk or Greek is a strike to what they believe.

I have one friend here like you guys. He fell in love with this gorgeous, wonderful Greek girl and they are getting married. Although he is willing to live in Greece, both of them agreed not to do so, she found a teaching job in UK, and my friend thinks that his future wife’s career is important than his own (mostly because he does not want to make her family think that he ruined her carrier by insisting on staying in United States so he is ruining his, love is a strange thing) so they will be living in UK.

Anyway, as I said I have many great Greek friends that I will not change it for millions (I guess I am a capitalist, the first thing I can thing of as an exchange value was dollars, Arrggh I hate myself hehe lol ).

congrats for wonderfull comments brother

My husband's very angry about this - hence why it is not discussed! But he always told me that if any Turk saw a Greek in trouble they would be there to help.

Thankyou for your reply

Any day, any time, I can stand one step forward to defend my Greek friends or be there to help them and I know they will do the same for me.

Really love conquers all. Sometimes I wonder why our life has been so difficult since we met....... The brother and sister who did this used my dead fathers memory against my husband aswell, I know that my Dad would've have loved him....
But I have gained a wonderful husband and I have really found out who my true friends are...

This website has been invaluable for me, I feel so isolated at times..
I just thank God every day for my other sisters and brothers for their help and support.

But most of all I thank him for my husband.

i was just wondering what turkish people's thoughts were on australians? because that hasn't been mentioned.

we get taught a lot here about our "shared" history.

I know about Gallipoli, which we were taught during high school years. We are taught that soldiers from Australia brought to a war in which they did not belong to, and they fought bravely and died bravely for a cause that was not even in their agenda.

As long as I know, Ataturk made a speech addressing to Australian families who lost their children in that war, saying something like "Do not trouble your hearts, your sons are now our sons, we will show the same respect that we are showing to our own soldiers that died here".

But personally, I do not know Australian culture or people and I believe that most of the Turks do not know much about that, too.

This is out of topic, but I love Australian made Sci-Fi series, Farscape, the best scifi on TV ever. I am a big fan of Farscape series, it was brilliant. When the Sci-Fi channel cancelled the series I was among with the ones who were sending faxes, raising campaigns, forcing Sci-Fi channel to step back with their funny decision lol

They had to air Farscape back! Anyway sorry for hijacking the topic, but truth must be heard

i suppose australia is so far away that turkish people wouldn't really see it as a place to go and visit, unless they have family here.

otherwise, they would only really come into contact with australians when they visit turkey as tourists and at the anzac day ceremonies.
