1.Universities are grounds where all types of personal freedoms (religious, political, sexual, whatever) should be freely practiced.
2. Universities are grounds where all types of personal freedoms (religious, political, sexual, whatever) should be freely discussed.
3. Both statements above are correct.

Which is correct?....Anyone with comments?

Definitely 2. Besides the fact that I think that those freedoms should be discussed freely on ANY ground..

I totally disagree with 1 and number 3 therefore doesnt make sense anymore either

In relation with the recent "Turban in University" crisis in Turkia, the Academic Council of Middle East Technical University declared a meaningful statement today, supporting Point (2) above.

Yes. Im happy that people who go to university now can wear their headscarf. I dont know whether on ilk okul children can wear it, but I think that in primary classes such signs of religion should be forbidden. The status of Islam in turkey these days is highly disputable and to be taken care of, and I dont think that children aged 4 till, lets say 8, have any idea what religion really is all about.

Nonetheless, its a good thing its no longer prohibited at university.

How is that inconsistent? I see a big difference between university and primary school. I think that that religion can and must be discussed with children on primary schools, but they should not be allowed to wear it yet: they have no idea what it means and probably do it because their moms do it. Would they do it if later they realized their mothers wore it for the wrong reasons? No. And they will put it on later themselves if they think their parents reasons for this are right.

That is another inconsistency...If headscarf is a divine order, it should be required from 13-14 onward.

The Quran surely does not say that Turban is required in Universities, only...

Yes but isnt 13-14 orta okul-lise? Im fine with headscarves in highschool (İ think.. I should think more on this though). But not in primary schools. The difference between primary school and university, and primary school and highschool, is in so much the same, that children havent thought about these kind of things yet. In highschool those kind of subjects start to rise questions in childrens minds and therefore they can make a choice, especially if during primary education they have been made aware of what the İslam (and other religions) are about.

And whether it is an ORDER, is disputable. Muslims in every corner of the world disagree on this topic. That it is divine, no doubt, but an order?

Yes, they said that at univesity too
I have decided that I shouldnt want to finish it quickly, but really take my time for it and only read when I feel like it, otherwise Ill get bored like a year ago.

Its hard for me to read, because I dont believe a word of it, and the difficult structures make it hard to understand. But it sure is an interesting read!!

Sort of I was merely stating that allowing such does not also bring headscarves to the schools, but only public sex and alcohol use/abuse.

Im glad I didnt grow up in such an environment, and would not want my eventual children to do so.

Well, as I also said, I dont believe a word of it, so for me its just a genious who wrote it. But I can imagine that in that time, when nearly nobody could read and write at all, this language must have been magnificent! I can only imagine its Arabic version...

For example, the Bible, when you read it, you can clearly feel its written by a human. But from Quran, I did not get that feeling as strongly. (İm only at third surah so maybe Ill think about this differently later).

as it was said here, statement number 2 is correct.
Deli Kizin, first statement did not emphasize on sexual practices, as you did in the end, it was just an example, perhaps more eloquent in pointing the difference between practicing and freedom of speaking.
In my opinion, considering segregation, it is not a good choice to wear head scarves in any other forms of institution.
Even statement number 2 in the first post enumerates topics related to personal freedom, which includes religion.
i think that the headscarf issue appeared in universities first as in the highest form of education. could be a first step in separating religion from public life in a healthy way.
Regarding what you said, deviating the initial post, if freedom of speech is accepted, that is valid for any subject, not just subjects which are subjectively favored. freedom of speech does not limit the subject of discussion, but the concept of discussion (and dialog) in itself limits the ways of addressing, requiring assertive communication.
I will not follow here all the course of this thread, but you have deviated with your first answer, in which you said that number 2 is correct, and this freedom of speech should have been extended (which is true, and added a plus to your answer, but was not the object of question). But stating after that number 1. thus implying logically number 3 is incorrect is redundant. If following the logical course, number 2 being correct, 1 and 3 are not. But the question was which is correct (not which is not correct).
Thus you entered into the "alogical" realm, and the lack of correct answering lead you to incorrect statements and in the end to an unclear emphasizing on the sexual freedom, which might have been the starting point for you in delimiting the correct answer (number2).
AlphaF pointed you the mistakes, but in the way to face you with them, does enhancing the "logical uncertainty" behind your affirmation.

AlphaF, I disagree with the way you lead (by questions) your discussions with Deli Kizin because I think it is sometimes harder to learn this way, because this method is dual, either cristalize, or confuses even more, not according attention to the undesired mistakes in thinking and aiming to find eventual hidden tendencies as being hided, but true.
This is the method I would use for a candidate at an interview, a selection, for example. Aiming to find out what a person actually desires, but not aiming at the fact that a person maybe desires/needs a healthier way of thinking. The latter can be practiced along with illogical realms such as jokes.

I did not emphasize on sex or whatever, and did not mean to. I only pointed out that, in case we allow free practice of ALL freedoms, this could be a consequence too. Something people loose out of eye-sight many times.

As for AlphaFs way of questioning. He is not at all interested in what people are to say, nor does he really give his own opinion. He just wants to stir up a bit and İm totally ok with that!

Sorry, i wrote this by myself.

The pms i write might be more different, the subject is different also in the way that i count, express my opinion in relating. It has a higher emotional support, to say in a way. but i think when evaluating, one has to be objective.

You did, even without wanting. Thus showes the capital letters also. And sex is the most obvious (and mostly recognised as having disastrous repercussions (out of tabu))))) example which can crisalize as a pro example of why freedom of practice is not a good option.

AlphaF gives/try to give-reflect the interlocutor's opinion.
He does not stir up.
the interlocutor does.
where the trick lies? because there is one.
but i shall discuss this in forum or with him personally.

I have no issues with idea that uncommon words and forced elegant language being in use for difficult ideas. But when the idea is sooo common that you could find almost the same in turkish coffee houses for retired men (emekliler kiraathanesi is the turkish name for it), you immediatly think that 'OMG what the heck is this.Sooo fake. Sorry but nothing hides away the cheapness of it.
I would rather prefer to listen that idea from the common man with his own words.

Sorry really..

It is no problem, I understand your opinion and accept your criticism as being told frankly.
do not forget i wanted to speak clearly, and that some socio-philosophical (i think) terms were used such as personal freedom and freedom of speech.
As for the coffee houses, i enjoy talking and drinking coffee.
Which i would have done in this case also, lest that the way this post was lead and Deli Kizin's hesitative replies have not determined me into an answer. Should this be a starting point into an another discussion, here i am.

Very short and pragmatic, i prefer the emekliler kiraathanesi (thank you for the turkish term. A nice tavla, coffee (unless pregnant lol) and a nice chat (in romanian there is the expression o vorba cinstita - an honest (literally translation, meaning coming from the heart-sincere, ... the way there are the talks in this place) talk.

AlphaF
sorry for the unproper formulation. i am rather uneducated, which after a certain age transforms into lack of manners.
what i was disagreeing with is the fact i know form experiments... that thoughts influence the outcome of discussions.

To Alpha and all other members whom we had this discussion in this thread:
i understand the name of portokalfa is the name given to a mime and not a symbol of something more in which you gave the courtezy to my name to come first.

i also understand a hidden criticism towards my expressing. it is not something i do good (i feel like, and that is because(1.i have my limits,2. i do not want to,3 i am doing it in this thread), not something i should even done. it is not what suits me, nor what i am required to do. i can well refrain from coffee houses. and some other things. i do not need them. it would be a lie to tell you, AlfaF, that this s because of you. no. it is the way i am. sharing your teachings with my inner desires. and this is the best a woman can give. it is called, in a way i think, love.

i can refrain.
even from marrying you i can refrain.
i would not be the fourth wife, isn't it?

i will not refrain from doing what is good and suitable, thus and not only thus pleasant to me.

and i shall let you resolve this short circuit of pain.
because i was wrong in the lack of understanding. it was what i did. not like i mistake.

PS i did not mis-spelled AlphaF, i am sure without looking.

And you, AlphaF, there is a point where i question if you deserve me. not taking in calculation my mistakes.
all this bitterness and doubt you have and what you needed to get over, too. and you did. you now feel it also.
after that point i do not doubt anything.
not even the responsabilities i have or the way i should act.
which would be - if i was to listen to your channel obturations(and tremendous fear of being left), to leave. if it was to my heart only, to listen to your approaches from now on.

when first this Turban issue came up i said: "the women should be free to choose" TAMAM ... but when they allowed them i saw how KARACARSAF started to appear ...
Regarding what Deli K. said - in Kuran Kerim it is said only like this ( its like a reproduction) cover yourself, dont let yourself be to men's fantasies ...
What we understand? Be decent woman, dont walk with your "things" opened because like this you cant be respected!
1. Turban is ARABIC CULTURE!
2. Turkey is secular republic, its not ruled by the "islamic law"
3. Soon the percentage of closed-women will be higher than the opened-women. We will go on the street and we will be seen as Non-muslims ...

Oh dear,
I thought I was posting to first part of portakalpha (alpha as alfa in turkish). But the second part is replying..(hmmmm. first part decided to go to sleep from msn or something like that?)
anyway.
Saying to a person 'you are common' brings the class issues into discussion which I have no intention to enter. I am not going to give a toss about the idea that some people might be thinking 'they are from the left ball of the sultan' so they should feel proud. That idea is tastless, tatty, cheap so as the people who think they are!!
My critisism was nothing to do with the personality or the class of the person.
I was merely referring to 'unhealtiness or cheapness of expressing kiraathane ideas with forced sophisticated language'.
I would recommend some psychotherapy sessions.

ps..maybe I am wrong! REs spend their entire professions by reading those boring specifications..May be it is simply the side effect.

This feeling might be the result of born into a rich family or going to a privileged school etc etc..

People are not born normally as manufacturing defects. But later in the life the way your family teaches you who you are, the schools you go, the work you do can result in defect personality.

I really touched something so precious to him..
It must be the reason why he keeps changing his post from second class to third, fifth ...He is unable to keep cool..
ha ha
And it is really nice to see you back as 'portokal only' dear portokal..lol

I agree with you about manufacturing defect issue..
People are not born normally as manufacturing defects. But later in the life the way your family teaches you who you are, the schools you go, the work you do can result in defect personality.
Ah.. too much 'weed' may cause the same effect btw..

The question is, how hard did he touch that ball... lol lol lol

You are right. I am not that happy at all dk.
Because, this is not a new thing for me. I spent almost my entire life trying to teach 'left ball proud people' that 'ball is a ball, left or right not that important'..
I kept telling them 'what you believed in your entire life was WRONG.' and I always got same type of responses and same type of expressions on their faces. So nothing new here either..It is the reason it is not giving me a great joy.

We do not worry, we just thought you didn't get it. But I think it's pointless to try to do it, because you probably never will. :-S

Yes Sui, we are still on this nauseating ride that, it seems, will NEVER end! Each must get in the last word but that can never be so it will go on through eternity.

It seems that the ones leading this ride went to sleep, so this is just a short stop, but dont worry..once they wake up the ride will continue

I think you are right..
I AM a gentelman and I will let this go and dont come back to this topic unless there is a strong indication I should..lol
I see no point from my side to apologise as I dont think my language was vulgar.

Thank you handsom for taking the right step to stop the nonsense. It is a wise man who knows when it's time to walk away.

I am confused (not a difficulty for me )

Did you mean to post your last comment on this thread or was it meant to be a pm? Or perhaps you are teasing? .

I think I need my sleep

do not be confused.
it was mented to be a pm.
no teasing! (with full meaning but also a play on word teas)

Is this what you were referring to Portokal? I don't know how my name got linked with your words. Perhaps it was during your attempt to reduce the size of the quotes from the post in which I quoted 2 of your posts. No deliberate action intended I'm sure.

I have decided to lock this thread. It was bleeding dead anyway, and started to get filled with useless insulting comments.

Let's agree to disagree and stop throwing stones at each other.

Another point: It would be really nice if members would keep their opinions under their own name. No harm in helping others with English, but it is rather weak to just take over others opinions or need someone to 'promote' your opinions. Let's keep it all clear and simple and publish your own ideas under your own name.
