Quoting azade: (s)he is a very interesting individual. Whoever says that Turkey is a country stuck in the past should take one look at Bülent Ersoy and zip it. |
Well...as much as things have changed in some ways, I would seriously hesitate to hold up Turkey as a "modern nation" where sexual politics are concerned. The traditional ideas here about gender identity and roles are quite different than in the west; the case of a celebrity or two can hardly be considered indicative of the general atmosphere.
I would say Bülent Ersoy and Zeki Müren are/were two exceptional individuals in a country that is still quite conservative on matters like this. Yes, Zeki Müren went onstage in the 60s in a mini skirt, but people mostly were in extreme denial that he was gay. "Not our Zeki!" Bülent Ersoy went through very difficult times and was banned from singing for a period. I think there is also the fact that these people of extreme celebrity status are so removed from the average Turk's everyday life that they can get away with more. Many people might love Zeki Müren and Bülent hanım, but if their own son came out to them as gay (let alone announced he wanted to change genders) there would be hell to pay. Witness the fact that an attempt at a gay pride march in Bursa last summer turned into a near-lynching by the local businessmen. Turkey has a *long* way to go in that area.

Neverheless Bülent Ersoy is an accepted individual today and I doubt that she would be widely accepted in my country. The issue of homosexuality is also frowned upon in many countries, just look at the United States. I don't think that many people would have a positive response at first if their close family members or friends were to jump out of the closet. It's not just an issue in Turkey, it's an issue in most countries. Heck, I think my mother would disown me.

Quoting illusion: Bülent Ersoy is most certainly a strong, imposing personality.
She can (apparently) fart, and with a single word: "effendim?" cause the OTHER person to apologize!

Unbelievable!! It certainly takes guts to do that!

Perhaps you are correct deli_kizin. I should not have posted that clip, as it has little to do with the original thread.

I saw that clip while I was trying to see if I actually liked her voice or not! I thought someone was wearing squeaky leather pants! It came across a little too unreal for me........
