Cost of living

This is a very general question I have, and maybe there is no real answer...

But does anyone have an idea of the cost of living out in Turkey?

Let me explain....

When my partner finishes his army service in February, I have hopes to move to Turkey and try and start a life for ourselves and see how we manage.

Here in England I am a university graduate and work in administration for the local hospital...reception if you prefer.

What kind of income can someone expect who is in a similar role out in Turkey? I know it may differ from place to place, but is there an AVERAGE?

Anything is of help to me...just so I have an idea.

çok teşekkür ederim!

It will probably be Izmir or close by. Don't mind commuting into the city.

We will be renting. We don't want to buy property just yet incase our plans change. We have a view to buy later on once we're settled.

Thanks!

Cost of living is very hard to answer, it depends what you spend your monry on. For example, locally produced goods are FAR cheaper than USA or UK: food, clothing, transport, cable TV service etc, marble, parke floor
But imported goods are far more expensive e.g. cosmetics and medicines, electrical goods, wall to wall carpeting.

If you live like a local, a local salary will be OK. But if you want to buy the more expensive goods you will find it hard to make ends meet

Ok, I'm not an expert on this subject. But here's what I've learned from my investigation and from asking people that live there. And it's just a estimate, so don't say I said so, ok?

Rent: $250-600 liras in other cities (not istanbul) For example: My friend is renting a house in Bursa for $250 liras a month. In Van it's $200-300 for a 2-3 bedroom house. Istanbul it's $800-3,000 liras month with the average being around $1300-1800.

Food (Grocery) is around $200-250 month for 2-3 people. And food seems to be weighed by Kilos instead of LBS like in the US.

Someone told me the average income of a local is $1000 liras and that is considered good. :-S The low wages is around $500-600 liras. $1500 liras a month is considered really good. A representative makes around $7,000 liras month (someone confirmed this?).

Internet Cafe: $1 lira for one hour or $1 lira for 2 hours depending on which area you're in.

Cell phone: $30-40 liras
Electricity: $40
Water: $30-50

And you need private health insurance. This is a MUST, I am trying to find out how much this cost. Meanwhile, at Atlas (company in UK) you can buy health insurance for people who travel or live aboard but I think there's a time limit. The quotes look pretty affordable.

You can buy a property for around $50,000-90,000.

Can someone add to this?
