One of the main reasons I don't want to move to Turkey to teach English are my pets. Does anyone know the rules about taking, specifically, a dog and a parrot to Turkey. AND, very importantly taking the dog and Turkey back to the U.S. when I eventually want to come back? Are there apartments that allow animals?

Hi, many apartments allow animals, especially in the big cities. I have 2 cocker spaniels. However some do have rules on no pets.
Going back to the USA, my friend takes her yorkshire terrier with her on holiday each year. As long as you keep their immunisation card up to date it is OK. A small dog that fits in a tiny cage (like her yorkie) goes in the plane with her, a bigger dog must be put to sleep and goes in the hold.
I have no idea about a parrot - maybe it flies across the Atlantic attached to the plane with a string like a tow rope???

Only joking about the parrot.
This website (US Embassy in Turkey) has got info about taking your pets back to the USA. There is a link to click for pet birds:

It seems you can take only one dog or one parrot, not both....

OH NO! My parrot I could take on the plane with me in a purse sized carrier. He is a small green parrot a Noble Macaw. He knows good (and bad) English. He is a good boy (most of the time!). Amonet is an Egyptian Pharoah Hound and looks like the Egyptian God Anubis, only she is brown. She would have to go in a kennel under the plane.

How long are you intending to stay in Turkey? It seems a hell of a lot to make those poor animals go through to be with you, when (I am afraid to say) they would be a lot happier left with relatives or friends.

Yes I agree with you! If my relatives or friends would have them! My bird sqwauks a lot and has one off-color thing he says (he also talks nice). People love my dog, but I don't know anyone who would take her for an extended period. She can be naughty when left alone. We will see, I might not even be going.

Hi, everyone. I'm new here. Just a quick reply/question.
Someone wrote that only one pet is allowed per person and when I visited the link, it appeared to me that perhaps this is the airline's limit (Turkish Airlines), not the Turkish government's limit. Can someone clarify if there is a limit to the number of pets you can bring into Turkey by government standards? My apologies if I am interpreting this incorrectly.
Thank you!
