I didn't realise that translators were subject to Article 301 in the Turkish Penal Code! The new Turkish Press Code has criminalised translation of any material which "belittles Turkishness". Translators are considered authors of translated material for any public use (press, cinema subtitles etc.).
I think I am understanding better now why Turkish people take any criticism as an insult, they are just not used to it!
Watch out when translating about dudus!

I don't think its a joke!!! From the news article it appears that journalists have tried to change the law, and failed.
Bloody hell! Does this mean that the few open minded Turkish members here that are willing to speak their minds are going to go "undercover" too now?
(Vineyards, Ciko, Sui, thehandsom .....DONT YOU DARE! )

I was talking about this very subject this weekend with some Turkish friends. What is even stranger is when I criticized my own government and historical figures, everyone sort of patted me on the back and agreed with me. It was just my own little social experiment, but it proved my point....Turkish people are loyal to their country even if it makes them loose an agruement!!
So, yes, please be careful, translators!!

Jail time for translations that are negative towards Turkey.. Hmm, sounds familiar.. Just like the old Ataturk epidemic.
Yes, your experiment proved that it can be very one sided. There is no practice what you preach slogan in Turkey.

Don't get me wrong, I think it is great that people are proud of where they come from. I am proud of who I am too, but it doesn't blind me to the truth. It just seems like so many people from so many countries, including my own, suffer from a kind of mass delusion and no amount of talking will change their mind.
