Antoine Galland was an unlikely Scheherazade. Born in 1646, he studied to be a classical scholar, and from 1670 to 1675 served as an interpreter for the French diplomatic mission in Constantinople. There, he studied Turkish, modern Greek, Arabic and Persian.
