Hi there,
In two weeks I am flying to Izmir. I've been told that if i use the bankomatiks, they will 'eat' some of my money all the time, so it's cheaper to get my euros changed in Yeni Turkish Liras.
Does anyone know if it's cheaper to do this in Holland or in Türkiye itself? The amount of money to be changed will not be enormous, something like €100,- i suppose.

With 100 euros, here you would have about 160 YTL. So compare it, and decide.

For me it is always easier to use ATMs wherever i go, but as Euro is your country's currency i think it would be better either to exchange it into YTL in Turkey or...not to exchange it at all. I have never been to Izmir but i'm guessing as it is a touristic place the situation will be more or less as in Istanbul or Antalya where you can pay in Euro without having to use the local currency.

That's one possibility, but my experience is that when you pay in Euro, prices are rounded up/rouded off to the nearest Euro most of the time.. It's normal that shop owners can't be bothered with making sure they have enough change for people paying with Euros. But as a customer you lose money.
I'd never change money overhere to bring it to Turkey, exchange rates are more favourable in Turkey.
I always use the Bankamatik/ATM machines though. The bigger places are peppered with them.

Ok thanks a lot. I will change it there then. It doesn't matter for me if i change too much and have money left at the end of the holiday, because i will need new liras next year anyhow.

Yes - that's OK now inflation has slowed down!!!
Some years ago, Turkish shopkeepers would give you a better price if you paid in GBP because they knew that if they held onto it for a few days it would be worth lots more.....

Yes - that's OK now inflation has slowed down!!!
Some years ago, Turkish shopkeepers would give you a better price if you paid in GBP because they knew that if they held onto it for a few days it would be worth lots more..... |
When I first went to Turkey I seem to recall only getting around 2000 old lira to the pound. The following year it was 4000 and this continued until a few years ago when the lira stabilized.
