Have you ever made a great friend via the 'net?

There is a great deal of publicity surrounding internet friendships and safety measures for parents to think about. People can reinvent themselves or be themselves. Now there is a fairly new site, (well the publicity is fairly new) called Second Life and one couple were in the news recently because their alter egos met on the site, then they met and eventually got married! This seemed quite pertinent to this site in a way, when I read the thread Catwoman revived, about married people using this site as a kick, although friendship doesn't necessarily have to mean romance.

Second Life is a virtual world where members can 'live' a virtual life, even buy real estate - very peculiar but it seems extremely popular.

So has anyone here got any cautionary tales or fairy tale endings? Does the internet fill a void in people's lives?

I know a lot of people who met online and are married now, and I am a person who met a lot of great people this way and we're friends although I haven't seen them all in the real life. Those that I first met online and then in the real life, turned out to be exactly like they seemed online.

Still, I know that the Internet is not a very safe place to be if you trust people too much. It's a bit easier for con artists to con people online, but if you are sensible then I don't think you could get hurt really.

Congratulations! I hope you will be very happy together .

I never saw the point in chatting to strangers on the net and I spent a good few years making sure my daughter was surfing safely. She introduced me to an online word game and I made a very good friend there almost immediately. We eventually met (much to my daughter's annoyance )and now I am friendly with a few of their friends too and we meet from time to time. It's not something I make a habit of and I only played the word game a few times. I came to this site and I've made some potentially firm friends. So I guess I've changed my opinion somewhat!

I met my best friend on the net first we were just random people who talk then we startes trusting more in each other, I dare to say he is my best friend even if he lives in another city, After 1 year of knowing eachother we decided to meet so he cameto my city and we met, it was awesome there was not any akward silence, we just had so much fun, we are soulmates I dare to say, I am really happy you can meet people that is worth it, we meet like a few times a year but it's totally worth it btw he is just my friend

Of course I've met tonssss of disgusting people on the net like

foreign person1: Open cam you to see
Me: ¬¬
Foreign person1: I show you dick
Me blooockkk

However the net is fun

Kadir

But to answer the question... I dont believe internet fills the void in people's life. I think many people create a void as an excuse to be online Some people just get lucky
