The ethics of posting essays as one's own

Quoting teaschip1:

Just because I didn't give a link doesn't mean I was passing it off as mine . . . If this way the case the majority of members here would be fraudulent as well. So why don't you scrutinize the majority here.

I'm sure people don't spend time checking each others' posts to discover whether or not the work is the poster's own. However, members do build up their own style of writing and so when a post doesn't quite seem to be in the same style, alarm bells will ring. I'm sure this was the case when Alameda investigated Teaschip's post on another thread.

I find it hard to understand why Teaschip1 expects people to realise that words she clearly makes an effort to pass off as her own are actually not hers. This is illogical thinking. She also seems to think that other members do this.

Whilst I know members have sometimes posted articles and ommitted to quote the source in error (irritating some members in the process, although not myself), it was always clear that the work was not theirs and they never intended to lead people to believe otherwise.

So, is there mileage in Teaschip1's accusation? Do other members search essays on the net with the deliberate intention to claim ownership of the selected work?

Before anyone decides to lock this thread, I am not being offensive, I am beginning a perfectly valid thread in order to explore the accusation teaschip1 has made. I would also like a discussion of the ethics of such practice.

Is it ok to do this: ethically? legally? respectfully?

What do members think?

You are clearly making a spectacle of yourself...No where shape or form did I claim that essay as mine or indicate anywhere it was my opinion. Alamda was asking for information from catwoman about the killings of kurds and I posted an essay that I found on the web. Information which I found some to be factual.

The only thing I might be guilty of is providing the source. Once again this is NOT a requirement of this site. I do not feel compelled to list a link everytime I post something. If you want additional information on my posts feel free to ask, I have no problem giving you the source.
Keep making a mockery of yourself.

I think this thread is designed as a personal attack that can only lead to more fights, so I'm locking it.

Teaschip, dear . . . I am not after another exchange with you. You already made your position clear, although, IMO, you are wrong. It's not about the requirements of this site, it's about plagiarism, copyright etc. Forgive me, but this site does not have any powers where copyright laws are concerned but it does have a duty to endeavour to ensure it's members don't infringe laws that could land them in court.

Perhaps some more learned members of the site can clarify the laws for us eh?

Is there anybody out there?

Unfortunately this is the only way I can respond to LIR who has posted below, AFTER this thread was locked.

So . . my response to LIR:

Absolutely not and my reasons are more logical than you may think.

It all began during a debate about somethinhg else. In order not to detract from that debate (there had already been a discussion about threads going off topic and spoiling debates) I took it to another thread. That thread was locked, for some reason, so I began another with the same title as this one. That thread appears to have been deleted overnight without explanation. So I have repeated it.

As a Moderator you clearly have the capability to post on a locked thread. Obviously that now looks, to anyone reading your posts, as though one of the threads was current until after your post. Well done .

This thread is not about teaschip1, it's about copyright issues. I gave some background information to put it in context. You can believe that or not. I don't care.

Now we are off topic again.

Care to begin a new thread about my supposed penchant for
repeating myself?

Karpusqueen you are currently complaining about teaschip1's post in 3 different threads - isn't this just a tiny bit excessive? Are you going for some sort of record?
