Would someone here be so kind to explain to me the use of ki? Maybe give an example of a sentence where "ki" is used? I see it is often used with subordinate clauses and participles, but it is not always very clear to me.

Is it possible to use it like the English "that"?
Example: I want him to shut up/I want that he shuts up - "Istiyorum ki susuyor!" (or is it "susun" in that case?)
Still, I have the feeling that the use is much broader than this...

Well, here is my humble opinion:

The conjunction "Kİ" is from persian language, which is member of Indo-European languages, including English. Therefore it is unsurprising that there is a similarity between Kİ and THAT.

I think, gramatically Kİ must be exactly equal to THAT.

"I know that you are a student."

Biliyorum ki sen bir öğrencisin. (usual)

According to grammar rules of Turkic langugages It would be>

Senin bir öğrenci olduğunu biliyorum. (also usual)

However, sometimes using of Kİ is unusual.

Bilmeliydim ki sen bir öğrenciydin > Unusual.

Senin bir öğrenci olduğunu bilmeliydim. (usual)

Sometimes Ki is used with ŞU(NU), I don't know why(grammatically). But it emphasizes the verbs:

Şunu biliyorum ki sen bir öğrencisin.

Şu bir gerçek ki sen bir öğrencisin.

Problem şu ki sen bir öğrencisin.


Ki can be also used for extra information.


Atilla, ki (kendisi) öğrencidir, İstanbul'da oturur. (Öğrenci olan Atilla İstanbul'da oturur.)


Teoriye göre, ki ben buna katılmıyorum, 2x2=4' tür.
