It's not only American Idol, there's Bulgarian Idol, Kazakh Idol and many many more. Basically it's a national talent show for making money by advertising companies and TV stations. Plus, it helps to promote people who hardly ever have anything wise to say but are pretty good at singing the songs a team of experts writes for them. It's like a casting for factory production line workers. It shows if you're able to process the product that you're given lol

It is a TV show for new singing talent, like a competition, the concept started in the UK with Pop Idol then went to USA (Amrican Idol) and now is in many other countries. Even Afganistan had just had their competition.

I dont know whether it is a trademark, as I don't believe it is the same companies in each country. Some individual might own the rights to the show, and make big bucks from it.

We have had quite a few of these shows:

Pop Idol
Britains Got Talent
Fame Acadamy
X Factor

Currently running Britains Got Talent and then in the summer we can look forward to the X Factor lol

I really, really, really, really miss all these shows - thank goodness I can still watch Turkish Pop Idol - a show that defies description really!
