Mehmet Ali Birand

Today, I will state some home truths that might displease you.
...
Every week, we report without interruption about how we've “dispersed the PKK” and “the panic” we've caused: Leaders forced into escaping, leaders killed during fighting and exaggerated casualty figures. If you happen to add them up, it looks as if we've nearly killed all PKK followers. However, they somehow still manage to move around and kill our soldiers.
.......
Surely you remember how Land Forces Chief Commander Gen. İlker Başbuğ put his finger on the real problem a while ago. He drew attention to the fact that we could never get rid of the PKK unless we found a way to stop others from joining the PKK in the mountains, and he wasn't talking about mining the mountain roads. .....
...................
Why do all those very young men leave? Those who are aware of the regional conditions can easily answer, “Why not?”
...........................
.......The new arrivals replace its lost troops and build up its morale. The media is very much aware of this fact, but chooses to cover it up with heroism. We have to realize one thing for our own good. We're only fooling ourselves. Our people are dying in vain. We have to finally realize that we won't get anywhere with superfluous tales of heroism.
