Does anyone know how to stop those annoying indexing programmes that run when you open your PC? I have one, don't know where it came from and I can't find it to stop it either.
If anyone can point me in the right direction, to find where it is located and stop it I will be forever grateful!

Yes, those anti virus things can slow things down quite a bit. I have them set up to check for updates when I open my computer and they scan all the time. It does slow things down, but better safe than sorry.
Have you heard of Ad Aware?
It's a neat program. One finds it amazing what can be picked up along the way...

what kind of virus software do you have? mcafee imo can bring a superdome to its knees it is so resource hungry!! if you have nero8 installed it also has nmindexstoring - it can be found when you press ctrl, alt del and is in the resource listing. You can kill the process from there. I will send my bill via pm ..

My vista laptop came with Norton preloaded about 1 year ago. The second day I had to remove it. Since then I am not using any AV software and am just fine.
There are several free for home, noncommercial use. One popular choice is Avast, which is "lightweight" and thus makes relatively low demands on system resources.

I'm using NOD32 and it doesn't use too much memory. Also, to eliminate unnecessary start-up programmes, I installed RegCleaner
Apart from that I do an occasional scan with Ad Aware

I had paid for an antivirus for years and still not happy with what I had bought. But someone recommended me Avast! I have been using this antivirus for a few months now and it works fine... and yes it is free! ... I also scan my computer once a week with Ad Aware.

I have located the problem, it is an exe file called:
svchost.exe
and it seems to be being used by several programmes and at some points is using 100% cpu, when I start my PC up. It takes several minute for the programmes to run, and the sound of my processor churning away is very irritating
I have tried to disable some of the this morning but my IT knowledge is not enough to know if I am doing any harm :-S
