Excellent article Si++, thanks so much for sharing!
The castle stands right next to the Indian Ocean. It has a tunnel that leads down to the water and that served as a passageway for Ottoman naval officers. Unfortunately, time has taken its toll on this tunnel, and all that is left today is ruins. The castle, too, has met the same fate. Its walls, made of rock, are very thick, but do not remain intact -- only the wall facing the sea still stands.
The Ottomans entered the area in 1517 after the Ottoman conquest of Egypt and expansion over the rest of North Africa. In 1517 Ottoman Naval Commander Emir Ali Bey came to Mombasa with only one galley, according to Kenyan history books. The commander was not intent on war, but on gaining an ally in the region against the Portuguese.
