I agree with Marion.  I always change my money there when I get to Turkey.  This year I was caught short in the back of beyond and my friend took me to a jeweller to change my money.  I think I got a slightly worse rate but it was handy in an emergency.  They also had the rates up on a board, together with the price of gold, but I passed on that offer .

 A very bad rate! 1 UK£ (GBP) = 2,29 and 1 Euro = 1,81995

The rate was less than 2.2 here in the UK last week.  Last year it was 2.50 in Turkey.  I guess the financial crunch in the west is to blame.

Why don´t you simply take your debit card and pay YTL out from an ATM? That´s what I always do.

 I always take a bit of YTL cash for the first day or so then use my debit card.  We have also changed up or rather paid for things like "genuine fake jeans"  with sterling.  But that may not be so attractive at the moment.
