Records of two military coups in the Turkish Republic´s recent past have been removed from official history textbooks for year-eight students, according to the Education Ministry´s Board of Education and Discipline. The sections on the military coup of Sept. 12, 1980, and the military intervention of Feb. 28, 1997,  were cut because the board decided the texts introduced matters contradictory to the democratic character of the republic and hampered consolidation of Turkish democracy. The textbook for the year-eight course History of the Turkish Republic and Kemalism included a number of sections about notorious events that marked the past 50 years of the 85-year-old Turkish Republic.

Removing texts from schoolbooks, showing only the parts of a countries history that is welcome... Hmmm... isn´t that a kind of censoring?

Calm down. You looks like sure enough to criticize whats going on here. You should know the source above is not clear and distorting the issue into "the goverment wants to cover up the coup history in turkey" .  People who dont know "the government itself naturally against coups in turkey" or People who dont know "what is the real issue" can belive that way.

The real issue is the Education Ministry removed some part of the history book because these parts approve or praise the coups in turkey. The book basicly says "the coups had been peformed with good reasons. The military performed these coups for good causes." That gives the idea "the military was right about performing these coups".

I will give you a source gives detailed info about the issue. (someone can do better translation)

Thanks for the clarification Gencturk. My response was based on the news article that Trudy provided, if there is another side of the story, I am interested to look at it too.
