What came to my head is a correct word-by-word translation. However "başına gelmek" has some special meaning. It means something happened to that person (not to his head). A foreigner may think this similar to "what came to my mind"(Having thought of an idea) and that would be wrong.

Thanks Yersu, yes I thought the sentence meant the person had an idea ie. what came to me(my head)..... sometimes these Turkish sentences have no direct translation, and if you do translate directly you ruin the meaning!{#emotions_dlg.yes}.  I guess the trick is to be able to spot one of these colloquial sayings and then just learn it for what it is Wink

Başına gelmek: To experience something

Aklına gelmek: A memory comes to mind.

Başıma neler geldi, bilemezsin: I have experienced a lot of events, you can´t even guess.

O aklıma geldi birden: I suddenly remembered her.

thx
