A man suspected of committing three murders since Saturday in the Aegean province of İzmir was apprehended early Wednesday by police in Muğla´s Bodrum district while he was sleeping. Confessing to the crimes in his initial testimony to police, H.A. said he did not know the three victims and had committed the murders for money. As the suspect was brought to İzmir from Bodrum on Wednesday, police took measures to prevent any vigilante attacks from locals. The suspect also said he had stolen the gun he allegedly used in the murders from a restaurant in Bodrum.
Police tracked suspect H.A. through victim Mustafa Has´ mobile phone, which H.A. allegedly sold to a shop in Muğla, said İzmir Gov. Cahit Kıraç. No witnesses have come forward in the killings, and security camera records have not yielded any clear footage. A sketch of the suspect was released by police Tuesday, but İzmir Police Chief Ercüment Yılmaz said the sketch, which bore no resemblance to the suspect, was released purposefully to allow him to move without concern that police were tracking him. Kıraç said H.A. did not have a criminal record.
H.A.’s first alleged victim was Esar Yaşar, a female bank employee. She was shot in the head Saturday night in the Balçova district. The second victim, Ayşe Selen Ayla, was attacked near her house. The last victim, Has, a 30-year-old transvestite, was murdered Monday night when she was shot in the head in her car in the Konak district. The suspect stole the victims´ bags and used the same gun in all three cases.
