I am trying to get a hold of workbooks to teach and practice Turkish language. I am a beginner. Are there any classroom textbooks used by professors at the universities or other institutions that teach Turkish language and how an I get one copy?

Please help me, I am very motivated but no classes are offered in my city and I would like to try learning on my own. I live in USA.

Thank you

As a fellow learner here are my thoughts:

Firstly, there are excellent free web-sites for learning basic Turkish. This site has lessons available if you click on Classes on the red toolbar above. Start with Beginner 1 and progress from there. There are chapters to read, and homework to submit that checks your understanding.

Livemocha is another excellent free learning web-site.

Secondly, in my opinion one of the best books for beginners is Teach Yourself Turkish. It is written by Pollard & Pollard. Buy the version with the CD for listening practise.

The Dilmer Language School in Turkey also publishes 2 self-study books (with answers) called ´I Study Turkish by Myself´. These can also be ordered via the internet. Make sure you get the English versions.

When you have a basic understanding, another more expensive set of books is ´Türkçe Öğrenelim´ (Which means Let´s learn Turkish). It is a colourful set of books, but I´m not sure if answers are provided in the Glossary books, as I only have the main 4 books.

Unless you have access to a native speaking Turk with some teaching skills, there is a limit to how far you can progress without conversation and listening practise.

Click on the blue headings to activate links to the relevant sites.

Anyway, good luck with your learning!  Smile
