FILL THE BLANKS in PAST TENSE

1. Arzu kitap ile ilgilen…….…..….. çünkü kitap İspanyolca ve Arzu İspanyolca bilmiyor.

2. Biz hiçbir şey ye……..……….. çünkü acık…..………….. .

3. Öğrenciler bugün derse gel…………….. çünkü bugün cumartesi, ders yok.

4. Arzu uçak ile yolculuk yap……………….. çünkü uçaktan kork…………………

5. Ben her zaman okula yürüyorum ama bugün çok geç kal………………. ve taksiye bin……………….. .

6. Sen genellikle akşam partiye gidiyorsun. Ama dün akşam git……………….

7. Dün Ali ve Ahmet tenis oyna………………. . Saat onda başla……………… ve on birde bitir……………….. .

 Answers:

1.       Arzu kitap ile ilgilenmedi çünkü kitap İspanyolca ve Arzu İspanyolca bilmiyor.

2.      Biz hiçbir şey yemedik çünkü acıkmadık.

3.      Öğrenciler bugün derse gelmediler çünkü bugün cumartesi, ders yok.

4.      Arzu uçak ile yolculuk yaptı çünkü uçaktan korkmadı. OR Arzu uçak ile yolculuk yapmadı çünkü uçaktan korktu.

5.      Ben her zaman okula yürüyorum ama bugün çok geç kaldım ve taksiye bindim.

6.      Sen genellikle akşam partiye gidiyorsun. Ama dün akşam gitmedin.

7.      Dün Ali ve Ahmet tenis oynadılar. Saat onda başladılar ve on birde bitirdiler.

Hi, have just found your post.  Started learning past tense this week - why do we sometimes use ma or me in the negative and not değil and when do we use the ´y´ buffer, is that just for was and were? 

Any answers please would be much appreciated.

me/ma suffixes get used with verbs to make them negative

geldin = you came, gelmedin = you did not come

değil means isn´t/aren´t and gets used with nouns and adjectives

arabam değil = it is not my car

zengin değilim = I am not rich

And this link about buffer letters explains their usage very well 

Sometimes you can use değil with -ma-/-me- to form double negative.

Gelmedi = He/She didn´t come

Gelmedi değil = It´s not that he/she didn´t come (Actually he/she came)

Gitmeyeceğim = I will not go

Gitmeyecek değilim = It´s not that I will not go (I certainly will go)

And sometimes you can form negative without using -ma-/-me-

Paris´e gittim = I have been to Paris

Paris´e gitmiş değilim = I have not been to Paris

Gideceğim = I will go

Gidecek değilim = I will not go

That said, of course forming negative verbs using -ma-/-me- suffix is the preferred way.
