Quote: Quoting robyn : But malaria? I never heard anything about that in Turkey...how do you protect yourself from it? |
there is medication you can take, speak with your doctor and they can advise you..it is high risk especially in areas with lakes etc as they attract more mosquitos due to the cilmatic conditions |
Well, it doesn't cheer me up, all this information about diseases. There are several types of medication I just looked up, not all usefull for every type of malaria and some have many side effects (like Lariam - English name?), for Turkey the advise is Chloroquine (and I hate that - it tastes so bitter). They advise to use anti-mosquito oil, to wear long sleeves and pants and in some areas even a mosquito-net.
Besides that there is the change of bilharzia (English?) so avoid walking barefoot in dead water. No vaccination possible but very well to treat (though I rather don't get it).
And they advise besides hepatitis A also B when you do 'dangerous' things like riding a motorbike, go rafting or get yourself a tattoo.

I've been going to Turkey now for the past 14 years and only had the HepA vaccination the first time I went. However, we have only visited popular tourist areas and I understand that if you travel 'up country' so to speak, you should get the recommended vaccinations.

For the south-west and aegian area no special precautions are needed. So you don't have to worry.

About malaria - (i live in South Africa where malaria is killing many people daily in certain parts of the country) - use insect lotion - especially in the evening when the female mosquito gets active. She needs blood and will try your feet - lower parts of the body close to ground level. Never go without this lotion day and night - as the tablets are dangerous if u take it for long periods - and may affect your eyesight.
Dont use perfume/aftershave lotion - as this attracts the female mosquito also. Keep your feet or legs covered at dawn.
Hipatitis can be contracted easily if u handle money - this is how my friend contracted this - and it goes to the liver - and she was very sick and the rest of her family also got it from her.
Still i did not worry about this when i visited Turkey and i came back healthy and fine.
