Maybe feeling a little bit homesick I was going through some material about my home town Turku. There was a nice anecdote in October 2010 New York Times as the city was introcuded as the one of the cultural capitals of Europe 2011:

The Europe Issue

A Finnish City Prepares for the Limelight

"Yet it’s a safe bet to say that many people outside northern Europe have never heard of the place. “When I tell people where I’m from, some say to me, ‘Oh, yeah, Turkey, I’ve been to that country,’ ” said Saara Malila, communications manager for the Turku 2011 Foundation,..."

Actually there are many discussions in the net about the similarity of the names.

The name of the city Turku originally simply ment ´a market place´.

I also used to think that it was something related to Turks.
