Turkish prime minister outlines paid military exemption conditions

Hürriyet photo  Hurriyet photo.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said Turkish nationals of 30 years of age or older will be able to fulfill their military obligation by paying 30,000 Turkish Liras.

Those who pay for military service will also be exempted from the 21-day basic military training, said Erdoğan, speaking at his Justice and Development Party (AKP) group meeting in Ankara today.

Erdoğan said Turkish nationals who have worked for at least three years abroad would also benefit from paid military service exemption in exchange for 10,000 euros, adding that they would be exempted from the 21-day basic military service as well.

There will also be no age limit for Turks working abroad, which was 38 years of age earlier.

The paid military service draft bill was sent to the Cabinet for deliberation and the designation of payment methods.

Bad news for the city of Burdur... if the lifting of the 21 day training period for these guys goes into law:

Burdur işte şimdi yandı

Ekonomisi büyük ölçüde bedelli askerliğe bağlı olan Burdur, yeni bedelli askerlik uygulamasında temel eğitimin kaldırılmasından büyük zarar görecek.

Bedelli ve dövizle askerlik yapanların yılda dört dönem geldiği Burdur, 21 günlük eğitimin sona ermesiyle birlikte askerlerin şehre sağladığı ekonomik katkıdan mahrum kalacak.

Bedelli askerlerle, Burdur’un otelleri, restoranları, konaklama ve gezi sektörü büyük ölçüde canlanıyordu.

Burdur, the majority of whose economy is linked to the "paid military service", will suffer a huge loss if the basic training is lifted from the new paid military service.
Those who do the paid military service (Turks in Turkey who satisfy the conditions) or foreign currency military service (Turks who live abroad) come to Burdur in four seasons of the year. With the ending of the 21 day military training, the city will lose out on the contribution to its economy made by these soldiers.

Burdur´s hotels, restaurants, tourism and travel sector are brought to life by the paid military service.

Bedelli askerlerin Burdur ekonomisine 21 günlük bir dönemde, toplam 2 milyon 500 bin lira kazandırdığı belirtilirken, bu rakam şehirde kişi başına 750 TL gelire denk geliyor.

Özellikle fotoğrafçılar, lokantalar, oteller, hediyelik eşya satanlar askerliğini bedelli olarak yapanlardan büyük kazanç elde ediyordu.

Those doing paid military service enable Burdur´s economy to earn 2,500,000 TL in a 21 day period; this is equal to 750 TL per person living in the city.
In particular, photographers, restaurants, hotels and giftshops earn a lot from those doing their military service.
