Hi,

I am an American in Turkey and I need a little help. I will be dining with my (Turkish) girlfriends family during the Bayram next week. In the USA it is customary to say a prayer before we eat. I would like to say at prayer (in Turkish) for her family before we eat. So:

1. Will that be acceptable?

2. I know you have to clean before praying. How will everyone clean prior to the meal if I say a prayer, or is the cleansing really required?

3. If it is acceptable can you suggest (in Turkish) specific phrases or words that are customary with Muslim Prayers?

4. I want to be perfect! But mostly I don´t want to screw up or be insulting or offensive.

Normally we say prayers after we eat, but there is one important word that is said before start eating which is;

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim. [ means " In the name of God, most Gracious, most Compassionate".]

This word is like a key that opens any door of blessing .So that word will be sufficient for you to impress her family. And just be yourself.

I am sure they will be happy if you say that word just before you start eating.

It is a good thing to say it. But saying it loudly can sound weird for some modern families. Say it in a low voice like whispering. They can hear and appreciate you.

Yes, of course, it shouldnt be in loud voice, as it should come from the heart rather than from the mouth.

Again, if I was you, I would just be myself and say things in a moderate level.
