A huge private collection of photographs from times of Sultan Abdulhamid II

http://www.loc.gov/pictures/search/?st=grid&co=ahii

Notice young ladies in the photos wear no headscarves. Makes one wonder if Ottomas were not really Muslims then.

Cool pics. I liked them.

No headscarves? yes, no headscarves.
At that time nobody interfere at headscarves, generally all dressing.
I saw even the pictures of khaliph´s daughters with no headscarves somewhere else.

ottomans was a multicultural society with more personal freedom.

we were discussing (or dictating actually) whether or not girls wear headscarves at schools for decades. Just a few years ago, it is allowed to wear headscarves in universities in a country claimed at least 95% are muslims! Still forbidden in high schools and for many state workers.

In about a century ago, whoever wants to wear headscarves, they are free to wear it. And whoever doesnt to wear it, they are free not to wear it. In anywhere, in state areas, in schools etc. I think we are going backwards (or forward i am not sure!) at point of freedom.

With regards to headscarves:

I think the more you forbid things, the more attractive they become.

Very cool pictures.  Thanks for posting.

I dont care if people wear two headscarves. The problem starts when they claim wearing headscarves is God´s orders to Moslems.

Look up headscarves in Google...You will find that they reflect a very old JEWISH tradition. Courious, is it not?

Abdulhamid II was actually against many Sionist political moves in Middle East - in his life time

Actually it is God´s order to muslim women, but still they are free to wear it or not. They are responsible for their actions. It is unacceptable to force women to wear it like Iran, not to wear it like Turkey. Give some freedom to people .

"And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands´ fathers, their sons, their husbands´ sons, their brothers, their brothers´ sons, their sisters´ sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed." Surat An-Nur, 31, Holy Quran

Yeah possible. All abrahamic religions share many things. We believe that their prophets were sent for same purposes by same God and we respect them. Look at Virgin Mary, even she is wearing a headcover. There was a sacrifice festival a few days ago, that is abrahamic too.

That is a simplistic view shared by those trying to market their superficial religious knowledge. The truth is that God´s instructions to consequtive Abrahamic prophets are not identical. Had they been identical, it would have been hard to argue any one religion is better then another; they woıld have been all same. Each one carries improvements over the previous one.

Even in Quran itself there are cases when one "ayet" is corrected, changed or totally anulled afterwards - by another "ayet". This is called "nesih", in religious terms but never mentioned by religious fanatics.

Now that corrections/improvements through divine channels is no longer active nesih is left to human intellect. Or, we follow rules set up for Arabs, 1400 years ago.
