Quoting Deli_kizin:

Quoting Kadir37:

Demagog;
Demos + gogos = Halk avcısı in Latin.

It comes from ancient greek From the words:
demos = the people
agogos = leading

It doesn't really matter, but maybe there are other people out there, like me, who like to know the origin of certain words. I like the origin to be correct

Exactly! And to be accurate, the origin of the first part is in the verb diero (to divide) and the second part comes from the verb ago (to lead)

In ancient greek times, a demagog was a political person who - in order to achieve his goals - was misleading the crowd with fake promises, faulse statements and flattery.

How true huh?

Yes absolutely true, demagogy camed from ancient Greece and even those Greeks said that the democracy isn't perfect (like Aristo for example)
Why? Because people belives in words, rhetoric and results (what the politicians really do) isn't so sweet like in those words.
Many years after Alex. de Toqueville wrote in "Democracy in America" that we vote for images, not for truly persons.
It will take places how long we have campaigns... but, this is democracy.

I think what is also specific in Turkey is this:
- lot of meetings with people
- very colorful

MORE QUANTUM PHYSICS

A demagogue is not necessarily misleading.

A demagogue is one that speaks in favor of the crowd's own existing beliefs and tendencies to gain the crowd's political support. He may or may not be misleading.

Am I wrong Sophie, dear?

Democracy has more to do with how a certain society is structured than whether or not individual persons in that society believe in democracy.

Even if 80% of a society believe in democracy, democracy will have a little chance of existence in that society if 90% income of that society is from a single source.

Those who control the income source will have the absolute ruling power. Rulers in such societies can only be replaced by force, and that will not bring democracy either: Just new rulers.

Yes Alpha mou, you are right. A demagogue is exactly that.

What I mentioned in my post, was the negative meaning that this word had in ancient times.

Now, if you're asking me, I still have a negative opinion about these people. They are always misleading us, using words that we wanna hear and promising things that from the beginning they know that are impossible to happen.
And we, silly crowd, we are following them, hoping for a better future each time.
