..

The proposal was submitted by Germany, which suggested postponing the new round of EU membership talks with Turkey by about four months to signal the bloc’s displeasure at the crackdown on anti-government protests.

Turkey needs EU membership talks now more than ever. Ongoing negotiations is the best way to make sure the democratization process continues. (Says the Finnish Minister for European Affairs and Foreign Trade Alexander Stubb who also expresses the wish that opponents of Turkey´s EU membership would not use recent events as pretext for their prejudices.)

Furter analysis on this :

..

The EU further criticised Turkey´s crackdown on anti-government protests and delayed the talks on Tuesday, a day before they were originally due to start.

Germany, backed by Austria and the Netherlands, blocked the planned talks, saying it would send the wrong signal so soon after police cracked down on protesters in Turkish cities.

EU governments did accept the talks in theory, agreeing to open negotiations on so-called Chapter 22, one of 35 sets of rules and regulations that candidate states must satisfy before gaining entry to the club, at some point this year.

..

It was the first movement on the virtually frozen Turkish bid for three years.

European Union, Turkey avoid rupture in relations..

Istanbul (CNN) -- The European Union avoided a rupture of relations with Turkey by agreeing to open a new round of membership negotiations with the Turkish government.

But the date for the next round of talks on the nation joining the EU will be determined only after publication of an annual progress report on Turkey.

The decision was reached after several long rounds of talks last weekend between the foreign ministers of Germany and Turkey. Germany had threatened to block Turkish membership negotiations after more than three weeks of riots in Turkey during which riot police repeatedly attacked anti-government demonstrators with tear gas and pepper spray.

It seems to me that EU has given us(or Erdogan) some time. But  Turkey´s annual progress report will not be great after all these.

I think, the dream of Turkish nationalists/ulusalcis, who have seen Turkey´s relations with EU as ´EU is trying to devide Turkey´, will come true in the end : EU will refuse us on the bases of human rights violations. I am not going to surprise Erdogan starts to talk with the same words and the same  mentality as Turkish nationalists very soon. He even started to say something like ´foreign powers/Soros´ etc (exactly the same as Turkish nationalists) lol

When the Prime Minister accuses foreign investors for supporting restlessness in Turkey he is biting the hand that is feeding him. Compared with many EU countries Turkey is doing well economically but at the same time it is very dependent on foreign investments.

Pluses:

- young population, plenty of labor

- huge inner market

Minuses:

- Productivity of work is not on the average West European level.

- Participating in working life is deficient.

- Labor is often not well educated.

- In a way Turkey is an economy of affiliate companies. A great deal of Turkish export consists of products of foreign companies only manufactured in Turkey.

- Turkey lives on short-term loans which means the country is vulnerable for changes in financial markets.

The crucial benefit Turkey has had in the international investors’ eyes until recently compared with other countries of the area has been stability. And Erdoğan instead of making more powerful enemies should do his best to keep it that way.
