A commentary on the run. I am still reading about the methodology employed to reach the ratings used in this report.
First of all the ratings and reports included in Freedom of the Press 2013 cover events that took place between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2012.
Second, countries scoring 0 to 30 are regarded as having “Free” media; 31 to 60, “Partly Free” media; and 61 to 100, “Not Free” media.
Hence my country Egypt which received a 62 rating wasn´t far behind from receiving a 59 - 60 point and be considered as "partly free".
Finally it is true that rankings when objective and unbiased are a valuable tool to assess the situation in a particular country, I don´t know though if the countries in question (i.e. which received 31 and above ranking) will take into consideration these rankings or if the intellectuals and the educated elites will take them as they are or they´ll be considered with a grain of salt ... and that is it!

There is no need to get angry!!
These things are measurable. They are measurable standards. If your state is jailing many journalists, if your jornalists are kicked off their jobs because of the PM, what would you expect? Western sources are not making these tables in order to humiliate us particularly. Instead of getting angry with them, we should just look into our country and try to correct these things.

and who makes those measurable standars? aliens? westeners again. do they take into consideration the conditions of the country when they make these standarts? do they count the political instability? when they go and kill a journalist in ANOTHER country, that doesnt get counted in those standarts as deprivation of media freedom does it? please.
i agree with you but these things are made so much and so intentionally, its starting to give me a rubber taste.

I think such rankings should never be taken without considering the methodology first, so that one can forge its own opinion about the reliability of the ranking.
I know Google is our friend (or is it really?), but here´s the full report for those wondering (and too lazy to search).

Who makes these standards? Well as far as I know, most of them were done by the west.
I am well awere that most of the concepts such as human rights, democracy, freedom of speech etc were not defined by us. Unfortunately most them were invented by the west. That, somehow, does not mean we must/should reject them by default.
You can, however as a country, keep living without taking these values into account. Some countries do. Saudi Arabia, Irak, Iran, Libya, Syria etc.. many of them.
That is a choice really.. But I wont stop demanding for a more free press because these measurable standards are invented by the west with the same logic as I will never stop being against the torture because human rights and its measurements were invented by the west.

Part of the brainwashing process is to cultivate people´s nationalistic feelings so that they don´t believe anything negative that is said about their countries and thus maintain the status quo.
UK is # 31
Canada # 29
France # 35
USA # 23
Here is a report by Reportes without Borders if you think that the previous one is the evil westerners trying to embarass innocent Turkey:
