Kendisi vs. o

Kendisi iyi bir yüzücüdür, ayrıca güzel de tenis oynar.

In the above sentence kendisi is used almost like the personal pronoun o. I don´t know the context, though. What kind of a situation could motivate this choice? Is the speaker comparing this person to others, connecting the sentence to what has been said before or just stressing the third person actor here?

It sounds more polite to my ears. I cant think about any other reason now.

That´s interesting. Like a more formal way to talk about a third person. Thanks, gokuyum.

If you want to be more formal & polite, you can even add plural marking "ler, lar" when u refer the 3th singular person.

Kendileri iyi bir yüzücüdür, ayrıca güzel de tenis oynarlar.

It would have been  politer saying like this --->" Ooooo Abla Hanımlar sohbet odasına  teşrif etmişler ! "

In that case I would have smelled the sarcasm. The one extra LAR just worked like a false coin for me.

"Kendileri iyi bir yüzücüdür..."

"Kendileri iyi bir yüzücüdürler..."

Both sounds correct to me but i prefer the first one.

I think, we are not talking about a real plural, so using singular or plural addings isnt a problem.
