Galata Kulesi dünyanın en eski kulelerinden biri olup

What does olup mean here?

Whenever you see up/ip suffixes on verbs, you have to read the whole sentence to get the meaning, as this suffix is used to shorten the verb where the same subject and verb tense is involved.

Galata Kulesi dünyanın en eski kulelerinden biri olup, Bizans İmparatoru Anastasius tarafından 528 yılında Fener Kulesi olarak inşa ettirilmiştir.

Galata Kulesi dünyanın en eski kulelerinden biri olmuştur ve Bizans İmparatoru Anastasius tarafından 528 yılında Fener Kulesi olarak inşa ettirilmişti

(Supposedly) the Galata Tower was one of the world´s oldest towers and in the year 528 it was ordered to be built as the Lighthouse Tower by Byzantine Emperor Anastasius.

olup = olmuştur = it (supposedly/apparently) was

The miştir suffix is used for reported statements

Yüklemleri aynı şekilde çekimlenmiş fiiller olan cümleleri birbirine bağlar. (It combines the sentences that their predicates are the verbs which have been conjugated the same.)

yemek (1to eat, 2meal)

dışarı (outside, 2outdoor)

çıkmak (1to go out, 2to ascend, 3...8....10...)

ye+ecek+im--------------------->yiyeceğim (i will eat)

çık+acak+ım--------------------->çıkacağım (i will go out)

Both of the predicates have been conjugated into the first singular person´s future tense.

Yemek yiyeceğim ve dışarı çıkacağım. (I´m going to eat and go out. (direct: I´m going to eat a meal and go outside.))

First sentence´s predicate is "yemek" (to eat)

yiyeceğim---make it nominative again-----yemek

yemek------remove the infinitive sfx.-----ye

ye+ip------ye+y+ip---yi+y+ip------------yiyip

Yemek yiyeceğim ve dışarı çıkacağım.

Yemek yiyip çıkacağım. (I´m going to eat and then go out.)

Galata Kulesi dünyanın en eski kulelerinden biri olup, Bizans İmparatoru Anastasius tarafından 528 yılında Fener Kulesi olarak inşa ettirilmiştir.

Galata Kulesi dünyanın en eski kulelerinden biri ve Bizans İmparatoru Anastasius tarafından 528 yılında Fener Kulesi olarak inşa ettirildi. (The Galata Tower is one of the oldest towers of the world and it has built by Bizance Emperor Anastasius in 528 as Lighthouse Tower.)

The first sentence´s predicate is a noun but it makes no difference. The verb is "olmak (to be)" there. That´s to say, "is".

This knowledge locates in an encyclopedia, therefore it´s needed to make it more official. We need to -dir to do it.

Galata Kulesi dünyanın en eski kulelerinden biridir ve Bizans İmparatoru Anastasius tarafından 528 yılında Fener Kulesi olarak inşa ettirilmiştir.

Even if there wasn´t "-dir", the verb was "olmak" again.

............biridir ve ............................ettirilmiştir

ol+ip--------------------------------->olup

...........biri olup ...............................ettirilmiştir

Galata Kulesi dünyanın en eski kulelerinden biri olup Bizans İmparatoru Anastasius tarafından 528 yılında Fener Kulesi olarak inşa ettirilmiştir.
