hayir - yok

a lot of people answer questions by saying yok and not hayir is that ok?

it depends on the question, yok is like not or ain´t

They are usually interchangable. When I went to Turkey they used yok a lot.

 

- yok is common in conversation

- yok literally means does not exist

- if someone asks if you like math you could say hayir

- if someone asks if a store is selling a certain item, yok is probabably better

- hayir could sound stronger than yok

yok has two different meaning

1: it doesnt exist.

2: no

you can hear a long "yooo" meaning "nooo" in english. 2nd meaning.

I´d been wondering about that, too. Like in films - somebody dies and the person who tried to save them but couldn´t reaches out with an expression of anguish and yells "YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" Which didn´t seem right, as to my knowledge it translated as "THERE ISN´T!" Also people seem to use "Yo" as a more general "no" in casual conversation.
